About the Book

A playbook filled with short lessons for new fathers who might not have had the best examples of fatherhood.

Book Synopsis

If you grew up without a father figure, you may be concerned whether you have what it takes to be a great dad. Author Kendall Smith, son of a single mother, takes you under his wing, sharing the wisdom he has gathered from his own experience as a father, from observing other dads, and from interviewing various generations of men. This playbook for fathers who, like Smith, did not have a regular and dependable father figure is packed with short lessons to answer questions new dads will face, from choosing your parenting style to what it means to really be the "man of the house" (spoiler alert: it's not the 1950s) to managing your expectations as your child grows into a unique person. With hilarious examples and a straightforward approach, Rookie Father is the mentor-in-a-book every new father needs to be the dad you want to be.

In reality, it is far more than a game changer. It's a life changer."

--Michael Byron Smith, author of The Power of Dadhood: How to Become the Father Your Child Needs

That's pretty much the question Kendall Smith answers in this book about fatherhood from the perspective of a guy who grew up without a dad. The trick is to gather information, study some good examples, and adopt a curious and optimistic outlook that allows you to grow. This book is a great place to start!"
--Lenore Skenazy, founder of Free-Range Kids

"Kendall Smith has given us a personal account of his life as a growing father. He is willing to learn from other fathers, willing to share regrets, willing to explore how to triage family difficulties, and best of all, how to keep living a fit and healthy life to have the energy and love to be very available to his child. His loving care is unmistakable as he shares how he has overcome the trials of his childhood with a major mission: to be the best, most loving father he can be. As he reveals experiences about learning from his wife, his devotion to his marriage, and the joy he has in parenting together, he sets the tone for an emotionally written, easy-going, fatherly style that comes across in every chapter. If you're a new father looking to feel engaged with another new father, Kendall is your guy. He's supportive, personable, and gives you the feeling that what he's learned, he wants to share with you."
--Laurie Hollman, PhD, psychoanalyst, award-winning author of the Parental Intelligence book series, Playing with Baby: Research-Based Play to Bond with Your Baby from Birth to One Year, and Are You Living with a Narcissist?

"First-time dads need Rookie Father! If you're one of the almost 20 million men out there who grew up without a dad of your own to teach you the guiding principles of being a good man and father, then you've just found the ultimate playbook to show you the way. Rookie Father checks all the important boxes by touching on everything from the importance of creating meaningful rituals with your kids to why it's so important to have a cohesive partnership with your spouse. And I love that the author uses his own experience as a child of divorce throughout the book to share his insights and give new dads permission to use the hard moments from their past to create a lasting legacy for the future. Giving this one to every new dad I know."

I recently read the book rookie father authored by Kendall Smith. I found this book very informative for anyone becoming a father for firstime. The writer went to great lengths to show how one can plan and also relieve the stress, of becoming a father. I spent over 30 years counseling men who would have benefited from a book such as this. I'm now retired but this would have been helpful. I am glad the author took the time to put this on paper.

Rookie Father is just what every Dad needs. Moms have hundreds of books and guides. Hey, no one even tells you that your baby doesn't recognize you for the first three months. It's all smell, and it's about her! So we gotta figure it trial and error? No, seek out guidance. And Kendall has taken the time and effort and skill to do it for us. He spoke to people who've been there. Compiled it. Wrote additional stuff to make sense of this incredibly singular and quizzical time. It's all so natural...not. It really does take a town, a community, a buddy system. Well, Kendall helped by doing most of the leg work. So you have a resource to check back on, check in on and then do it all your way. And that will be the right way.

Practical advice not just for Rookie Dads but for People in general!

Kendall's book is filled with short but salient nuggets of practical advice for the Rookie Dad (but aren't we all at the end of the day? - how many of us can actually say we followed in our Father's footsteps?) mixed with interesting and sometimes moving insights from his own childhood memories and experiences. I would go so far as to say it's a tome of advice on not only how to be a good Dad but how to be a good Person. Kendall is humble, intelligent, and very caring of his wife and child and it comes across on every page. Anyone who reads this book will benefit from it.

You don’t have to be a “rookie” or a “father” to gain insight from Kendall Smith’s latest book of that title. As a mom of two school-aged children, I am always trying to be a better parent. Who isn’t? The wisdom and advice the Rookie Father offers transcends all stages of parenting. Instead of letting the experience of having an absentee father negatively define him, Smith turned it into a learning experience for him and all of his readers. On several occasions while reading the book, I found myself thinking, “that’s a great idea — I should really try to do that.” Rookie Father is insightful and inspiring. A must read for parents of all stages!

A Terrific Book for New and Experienced Fathers Alike

A very useful book, which surpassed my expectations. Being an experienced parent, I was unsure if Rookie Father would provide a new perspective—it did, and the overarching theme is empowering and optimistic. The ‘Playbook’ approach, which the author takes, is distinct compared to other self-help titles I’ve come across. It provides succinct advice in bite-size pieces – perfect for new dads who want to the heart of the matter, and each chapter is 1-2 pages long. That was very useful, especially the section on how to manage in-law relationships. Choice advice! This is the perfect book for new dads who may questions themselves, and every parent does so when they enter the parenting stage of their lives. This is not only a terrific book for oneself, it’s the perfect gift – baby showers, in particular, come to mind.
