About this item

Few people know that Cleveland hosted a National League team more than a decade before the American League had a franchise there. Baseball buff Fleitz recounts the Cleveland Spiders' eventful and interesting history. Originally called the Blue and then the Spiders, the team played in the American Association in 1887 and 1888, and then in the National League from 1889 to 1899. The mark the team left on the National League and on baseball itself was not a positive one in many ways. They played in baseball’s roughest, toughest era. The last decade of the nineties may have been called the “Gay Nineties,” but it was full of economic recession, labor violence, and racial segregation, and the sport of baseball reflected the best and worst of the era: the Cleveland Spiders were the ugliest of all. Led by “Patsy” Tebeau, a denizen of the tough Irish immigrant enclaves of St. Louis, there were brawls, fan violence, and umpire abuse, all strategies regarded as necessary for winning at the time. Although Cy Young and Bobby Wallace were bright spots and exceptions to the rule, the Spiders ended their run on a sour note when the 1899 edition of the club, with its start performers replaced by low-salaried minor leagues and semi-pros, came in with the worst record in the history of major league ball, winning only 20 of its 154 games. Tebeau died still believing that baseball should be a blood sport by his own hand after his wife and children decamped for divorce court in 1918.
