about this item

Leach aims to stimulate interest in Russian, Jewish, homosexual, archaeologist Leo S. Klejn’s work (1927-). He offers a window on a different intellectual world and an archaeological tradition that developed almost entirely independent of the Anglo-American one and is largely unknown to that tradition. He covers Klejn’s wide-ranging intellectual curiosity, prodigious productivity, and his life, which Klejn himself divides into before prison and after prison. Caught up in the Leningrad wave of arrests in 1981, he was among the cohort of professors and lecturers arrested, mainly Jews, who were published in the West and were popular among students. His incarceration brought him to the belief that the natural manner of society is like life in prison--bloody, violent, sometimes lethal--while outside society is artificial and structured by culture.
