About this item

As a counter to modern claims and practices of religions caught up in their cultural and political contexts, Olson presents the original texts of religions from around the world and offers interpretive comment on what the founders' intents seem to have been. He is clear that not all religious texts are sacred and not all religions have texts. In general, he says, religious traditions that have sacred texts are grounded in a divine revelation, making the revealed message sacred by virtue of its origin from a higher being--the monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam being prime examples. In other religious traditions, texts become sacred by virtue of the common consent of believers, usually on the authority of a human person such as Buddha. The categories are not always easy to distinguish, he admits. Aside from the well known world religions, he includes texts of Baha'i, Jainism, Mormonism, Shinto, Sikhism, and Zoroastrianism.
