This course-based primer provides newcomers to the field with a concise yet fairly complete introduction to the emerging field of topological insulators. A pedagogical approach is achieved by considering first in some detail the simplest physical system - the SSH model of polyacetylene - describing spineless fermions hopping on a 1D lattice with staggered hopping amplitudes. In this way the most important concepts - such as the single-particle Hamiltonian, the difference between bulk and boundary, adiabatic phases and their connection to observables, the (chiral) symmetry that restricts the values of these phases, and bulk-boundary correspondence are introduced before being treated in more detail in the subsequent chapters.
