This book examines the currentthinking on five critical social and political areas in mathematics education. Itfocuses on material conditions in teaching and learning, and details featuresof social life and their influence on mathematics teaching, learning andachievement. Following an introduction, the first section addresses equitableaccess and participation in quality mathematics education. It explores thisissue in different contexts and from different ideological perspectives. Thesecond section traces the emergence and development of the notion of activismin mathematics education in theory, in the literature, in research and inpractice. The third section then moves on to explore current research onthe political forces at work in identity, subjectivity and (dis)ability withinmathematics education, showing how emphasis on language and discourse provides informationfor this research, and how new directions are being pursued to address thediverse material conditions that shape learning experiences in mathematicseducation. Economic factors behind mathematics achievement form the topic ofsection four, which examines the political dimensions of mathematics educationthrough the influence of national and global economic structures. The finalsection addresses distribution of power and cultural regimes of truth, based onthe premise that although often deemed apolitical, mathematics and mathematicseducation are highly political institutions in our society. The book concludeswith a summary and recommendations for the future.
