about this item

In this book, UK contributors in social policy, global social policy, and comparative social policy offer a cross-national and international focus. They unite the applied empirical concerns of traditional social policy scholarship with the broader theoretical perspectives found in comparative political economy and macro-sociology in order to explain how the intensification of global economic competition has influenced the direction of welfare state reform in the OECD countries in recent decades. They offer alternatives to the competition state thesis to better account for how welfare states have responded to competition imperatives. Some specific subjects are transformations in the socioeconomic governance of the EU, fuel poverty objectives and globalized energy markets, and welfare reform and the rights of disabled people. The book concludes by setting out an agenda for future research that transcends the welfare state and competition state dichotomy. Distributed in North America by University of Chicago Press.
