About this item

This history explores the causes, factors, and outcomes of Modoc War, which began in November 1872 when the US Cavalry ambushed the Modoc tribe at their home village on the Lost River. The book details the Modoc’s successful use of guerilla tactics in the lava beds of northern California and the killing of US General E. R. S. Canby by Modoc chief Captain Jack, as well as the eventual betrayal and capture of Captain Jack. The book also contains previously unknown info on the role of pioneer family the Applegates. The preface looks at Modoc spirituality and Captain Jack’s legacy, and the afterword examines the effect of the Modoc War on attitudes to Native Americans in the West. The book contains b&w historical illustrations and maps, along with contemporary color photos of places by Bill Stafford. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
