About this item

The author compares modern American superheroes of the Golden Age with ancient Israelite characters of the post-exilic age from a cross-cultural perspective, looking at how well-known stories of biblical characters can be read as hero stories and how those stories may have met cultural needs, why hero stories emerge in cultures at specific times of crisis, and how they reveal their own hero potential to members of those cultures, noting that these two contexts mark major eras in both US and Jewish histories and that the post-exilic context saw the greatest amount of the biblical literature emerge in response to that context’s crises and the Golden Age context from the late 1930s to the late 1950s in the US saw a proliferation of the most popular superheroes. He focuses on elements of the hero myth (origin story, test, call, magical aid, adventures with villains, and rewards for all), along with portraits of the hero and identity, illustrating motifs of hero myths shared by both. He discusses the origin of superheroes and the superhero genre and the contexts of crises in which these hero myths emerged in modern US and ancient Israelite cultures, as well as the psychology and cultural and individual value of superheroes, then compares Superman and Moses, Batman and Samson, Wonder Woman and Esther, and Captain America and King David.
