about this item

Author James Percoco is an award-winning teacher and an advocate of using the National Parks to teach history. In this resource for teachers of American history, he provides a wealth of classroom lessons, activities, and service-learning projects for studying the sites, people, and events commemorated in the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, the 180-mile National Heritage Area that contains sites from Gettysburg to Monticello. There is a special focus on helping students understand interrelated ideas of slavery, racism, and Indian extermination, through the use of primary source speeches and documents, such as a 1925 pamphlet describing eugenics policies in the state of Virginia and a Black Panther Party manifesto from the 1960s. In addition to primary source materials, the author points teachers towards podcasts, videos, and virtual tours. Appendices provide primary sources, student worksheets, scripts for choral reading of founding documents, and material from the Of the Student, By the Student, For the Student curriculum resource guide. An extensive bibliography lists primary and secondary sources for teachers and students. The book contains b&w historical photos and maps.
