About this item

Originating in a conference in 2013, in Ghent University, Dessein and Teng bring together researchers on Abhidharma/Abhidharma, who come from different institutes all over the globe, whose research activities concern different epochs of Buddhist history and who deal with Abhidharmic developments in different geographic regions, and which concern different types of material. The word Abhidhamma/Abhidharma is used both to refer to the method in which the Buddhist doctrine is set forth, and to the genre of literature in which this is done. Dessein and Teng approach Abhidharma as an exegetical technique or strategy employed by fourth-fifth century and seventh-century Chinese intellectuals, respectively, and they try to bring about the historical significance of this technique or strategy for the intellectual world of medieval China.
