About this item

Elder, an auto racing publicist and football researcher, documents the fighting of Henry Washington Hilliard’s Legion, members of Brigadier General Archibald Gracie’s brigade of Alabama Confederates, at the battle of Chickamauga during the Civil War. He describes how in September 1963, the soldiers of the Legion helped push a force of Union defenders away from their defensive positions and off the top of Horseshoe Ridge, then were knocked off the side of the hill due to heavy casualties and low ammunition. He contends that the Legion accomplished more than these contributions, showing that they not only forced Union defenders away from the defense of the Ridge’s Hill, but that a small group of Gracie’s soldiers participated in the capture of a few hundred Union soldiers who were the last defenders of the ridge. He describes the origin of Hilliard’s Legion and the steps it followed as part of Gracie’s command. A roster of Hilliard’s Legion is included.
