Madonna Louise Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan. She is a singer, songwriter, and actress. She is recognized as the best-selling female recording-artist of all time by Guinness World Records, and as the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century, having sold more than 300 million records worldwide. She belongs to the UK Music Hall of Fame (which she co-founded) and she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. She has launched a clothing line, M by Madonna, in collaboration with Swedish retailer H&M, and the Material Girl fashion line designed with her daughter Lourdes. She has also launched a skin-care line in Japan, MDNA Skin. Madonna has appeared in 26 feature films, three theatrical plays, and ten television episodes. She received a Saturn award nomination for Best Actress for her role as Breathless Mahoney in Dick Tracy. Her most praised role was as Eva Peron in the 1996 film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Evita. Her performance was acclaimed by critics and won her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. She has also directed two feature films, Filth and Wisdom and W.E., one short film, secretprojectrevolution with Steven Klein, and two documentaries, I'm Going to Tell You a Secret and I Am Because We Are. Through her charity Raising Malawi she has built schools in Malawi, and she has contributed funds to eliminate poverty in her native Detroit. She has four children and The English Roses is her first children's book.
