12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

I remember there being rumors about a Karate Kid remake and The Smiths were probably going to get involved. My daughter saw this via rental at her college about five years back. I saw this on sale for $4.75 over the weekend so I snagged it. I enjoyed the performance from Chan and young Smith, but I thought it went rather long for a familiar and youthful tale. Adults can tolerate it, but probably won't enjoy it. I thought the little music video at the end was cute--but overall, if it isn't on sale don't buy it. Catch it on TV if you like it that bad and don't want to pay $14.99 or more.

I was pleasantly surprise that The Karate Kid held my attention from the beginning to the end. Jaden Smith was great. He was talented, believeable and very skillful. He and Jackie Chan worked well together. I really loved it. The Karate Kid will be my Thanksgiving movie for my family.
