Raw but Valuable Principals for Adults and Teens

I ordered this book for my 16-year-old granddaughter but had to read it first to be sure it was appropriate. Like the author, I am also a retired Marine and recruiter, so I was interested to see how her 11 principals may have derived from her Marine Corps experiences. Her book was so much deeper than that, and raw. Her principals may be stated in military terminology, but they were learned “the hard way” by her life experiences in family and on the streets. She learned how to “adapt and overcome” because she had the strength to set and achieve goals despite myriad serious obstacles. She records these lessons, and then gives the reader a chance to write down what needs to be overcome and improved in the reader’s life. I wanted a good reference and tool to help raise a granddaughter who has many of the same doubts, fears, and issues as the young Tee. This book is raw, and I was at first hesitant to let her read how a now-successful young woman can experience family disfunction, drugs and alcohol, school and street violence, school suspension, and gang life and still come out on top. Was I giving a permission to experiment? On consideration of the experiences and exposures of teenagers today, I decided that the 11 principals were important enough, and that Tee’s background lends them interest and credibility. That has turned out to be the case.
