About the Book

"When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances "Frankie" McGrath hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation. Raised on idyllic Coronado Island and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing, being a good girl. But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different choice for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path. As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war, as well as the unexpected trauma of coming home to a changed and politically divided America."--

Book Synopsis

The missing. The forgotten. The brave... The women.

From master storyteller Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds, comes the story of a turbulent, transformative era in America: the 1960s. The Women is that rarest of novels--at once an intimate portrait of a woman coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided by war and broken by politics, of a generation both fueled by dreams and lost on the battlefield.
"Women can be heroes, too."

When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances "Frankie" McGrath hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war, as well as the unexpected trauma of coming home to a changed and politically divided America.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on the story of all women who put themselves in harm's way to help others. Women whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has all too often been forgotten. A novel of searing insight and lyric beauty, The Women is a profoundly emotional, richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose extraordinary idealism and courage under fire define a generation.

Review Quotes

"The Women is historical fiction at its very best. So moving, so wrenching, and yet, in the end, uplifting. Brava! I loved The Nightingale and The Four Winds, but The Women is my favorite." --Nicholas D. Kristof, Pulitzer Prize-winning coauthor of Half the Sky

"One of the greatest storytellers of our time, Kristin Hannah, tackles one of the most cruel and despicable wars of the last century, the Vietnam War. The Women reveals the powerful contributions and horrific sacrifices of the American military nurses who served in a war whose agencies refused to acknowledge that they were
even there. Perhaps no words can bring closure to a nation still ashamed of booing our returning heroes, but the heroine, Frances McGrath, stirs a deep, overdue compassion and tears for every single soldier--and especially the forgotten women who sacrificed so much. Never has a novel of war metamorphosed so profoundly into a story of the human heart." --Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing

"Stuns with sacrifice; uplifts with heroism . . . an important, long overdue tribute to the brave women nurses who served in Vietnam." --Bonnie Garmus, author of Lessons in Chemistry

"Hannah's emotionally charged page-turner (after The Four Winds) centers on a young nurse whose life is changed by the Vietnam War. Before Frankie McGrath begins basic training for the Army in 1966, her older brother Finley is killed in action. Frankie excels as a surgical nurse in Vietnam and becomes close with fellow nurses Ethel and Barb. After Ethel's tour ends, Frankie and Barb gets assigned to the base at Pleiku, near the Cambodian border, where some of the heaviest fighting occurs. There, she reunites with Navy officer Rye Walsh, Finley's best friend, and they become lovers. When Frankie returns to the U.S., she's met with indifference for her service from her parents, who are still grieving her brother's death, and disdain from people who oppose the war. She leans on alcohol and drugs while struggling to acclimate to civilian life. Though the situations and dialogue can feel contrived (Rye, after announcing he's re-upping, says to Frankie at the close of a chapter, "I'm not leaving my girl"), Hannah's depictions of Frankie tending to wounded soldiers are urgent and eye-opening, and a reunion of the three nurses for Frankie's benefit is poignantly told. Fans of women's historicals will enjoy this magnetic wartime story." --Publishers Weekly

I am in awe. This is the first book I’ve ever read from Kristin Hannah, given I’ve always been drawn to her stories. This book here! Is absolutely stunning and grabbed my attention right from the beginning! This audio book truly was amazing and I highly recommend both the book and audio versions. I was constantly jaw dropped and gasping 🫢 so much so that my husband was asking if I was okay 😂 What’s crazy is every time I thought the story was going to take a breather I again was in shock of what happened next! I legit was walking my dog this morning covering my mouth and screaming at some things toward the end of the audiobook 😂 I’m truly at a loss for words knowing I can never read this for the first time ever again! Frankie is an amazing young lady that is so excited to make her family proud, they all have a history of serving the country exceptttttt they aren’t so thrilled with her leaving when women “aren’t actually serving”! She leaves and She is thrown right into combat. So much happens Love Loss PTSD Family and found family And Betrayal Protests Hippies Black panther And yes women fighting to be heard in the most iconic way! If u want that special book to give you that 5 star feeling! This is for you

The way Kristin writes pulls you in as if you are watching a movie in front of you. The detailed description of the surrounding/emotions is phenomenal. I was so drawn to this book, but was also educated on the trauma and terrible experiences these heroes had to go through. I felt all the emotions as Frankie did. Only con, if I’d even call it one, is the romance. Without spoilers: the instant pull Frankie had seemed unrealistic especially for Frankies character. However, I love it no less and will forever recommend this book!

Unpopular opinion but I cannot get past these first few chapters. I loved The Nightingale and The Great Alone but many of her other books, I am finding, have so much "filler" is the best way I can describe it. So much small talk chatter bores me to death! Many of her books (because I got excited after reading the first two) have been a struggle to get through, I have to skim through many pages of small talk nonsense to get to anything intriguing. I'm not sure I'll buy another book from this author.

One word: Phenomenal. If you haven't read it, or have been on the fence-please just read this one. I absolutely recommend this one with my highest praise. Heart-wrenching & so powerful. I don't want to say too much, because I don't want to give anything away. But excuse me while I go blow my nose again... And that ending... my heart. wow. Taking a moment to talk about Frances (Frankie)- our main character. The power, development, & traits that she shows throughout this book took us on a rollercoaster of her journey of being a nurse during the Vietnam war & all of the after effects of coming home. I just wanted to reach through the book & give her the biggest hug. "In this crazy, chaotic, divided world that was run by men, you could count on the women." ""Women can be heroes, too."

This is another phenomenal book by Kristin Hannah. Thank you for shining a light on the brave heroines that cared for all during that traumatic and inhumane war. My uncle was a chopper pilot and this gave me a glimpse of what his experience may have been like.

I cannot attest to the entire book since I just started reading it, but after a mere 20 minutes, I am solidly hooked! Vietnam was so raw and misunderstood. Soldiers and nurses alike were so disrespected and unacknowledged and unappreciated for the hell they endured. I appreciate the author for bringing their story into light in a beautifully written way.

If you are interested in the Viet Nam war, you’ll enjoy this book. It shows the nurses side of the war. I was in school at this time and knew men that were there, so it really kept my interest.
