About this item
Jim McDoniel’s debut novel, An Unattractive Vampire, is a darkly comic urban fantasy of ancient horrors in suburban cities. After three hundred years of underground imprisonment, the vampire Yulric Bile is set loose into our modern world and finds that vampires have become very pretty, very weak, and most disgustingly of all, very good. He sets off to rectify this situation or, at least, murder the one responsible. With the help of a vampire wannabe and the eight-year-old reincarnation of his greatest foe, he confronts the sexy, modern vampires multiple times, mostly to no avail. To even the odds, he recruits his own cadre of ancient, horrifying, and powerful vampires and takes them into battle against the father of modern vampirism and his army of undead TV stars and rave-goers. While they do kill hundreds of attractive foes, Yulric’s allies quickly change sides when shown the many advantages of the more civilized vampire lifestyle. In the end, Yulric retreats to the home of his human “friends” where he and the eight-year-old begin their new mission: to hunt vampires. Because in a world where vampires are heroes, it is the only way for Yulric to be a monster again.
