About this item

Based on interviews with members of the alliances, in addition to other sources, this study describes alliances between Native American nations and rural American residents, particularly farmers, ranchers, and fishers, who worked together to protect rural lands and deal with environmental issues in the West and Midwest: in western Washington with the “fish wars”; in eastern Washington and Oregon and Idaho, where dams challenged tribal fishing rights and farmers and ranchers conflicted with tribes over water rights; in Nevada, where the Western Shoshone and Ho-Chunk Nation formed alliances to stop military projects; in the Northern Plains, where the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne formed alliances with ranchers and farmers against coal, gold, and uranium mining; and in northern Wisconsin with the fishing rights struggle. It considers the common sense of place of Native and non-Native communities, their common purposes in facing a shared enemy, and the common sense of understanding that could extend beyond short-term alliance to long-term cooperation.
