about this item

Based on presentations from the colloquium, “Messianism, Millenarism, and Prophecy in the Iberian World, Fifteenth to Eighteenth Centuries,” held in São Paulo, Brazil, in August 2012, which was associated with the project, “Interpretations and Readings of the Prophecies of the Five Kingdoms in the Seventeenth Century,” the 10 essays in this volume examine millenarian and messianic prophetic movements in the Spanish and Portuguese empires in the early modern period. History scholars from the US, Brazil, and Europe discuss messianisms, millenarianisms, and prophecies in the Americas of Iberian colonization; prophets, fortune-tellers, and millenarians in the Iberian Peninsula in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including Friar Juan Serrada, D. Antônio, Prior of Crato, and the eremite Domingos; and prophetic phenomena in messianism in Portugal, including the works of João de Castro, Manuel Bocarro/Jacob Rosales, and the Jesuit Vieira.
