About this item

This textbook on women and politics in the US introduces students to the history of women's movements; scholarship on women as candidates, political leaders, and political participants; and contemporary policy issues. It emphasizes the need to reconcile demands for equality with biological differences between women and men and how in trying to resolve this paradox of gender equality, women have either focused on legal equality (that women and men must be treated the same), or fairness based on women's biological differences from men (that treating them the same when they are different is unfair). This is discussed within the context of the ideology of separate spheres for men and women, and it incorporates race, class, sexual orientation, and political ideology. Chapters address women's suffrage and the Equal Rights Amendment; women as voters, political participants, candidates for political office, and politicians; women in the context of public policy, education, work, wages, and the economy; family and fertility issues; and progress in achieving equality. Reorganized and streamlined, this edition includes recent events, discussion of new critical perspectives, and current challenges to gender equality, including the 2016 US presidential election and Hillary Clinton's candidacy, progress toward gender equality under the Obama administration, reproductive rights and campus sexual assault, and state policies, as well as international comparative content. It includes updates to figures and tables, feature boxes, and current issues, as well as current scholarship on conservative women, expanded coverage of women in the military, and updates to policy on education, work, and family and fertility politics. It adds key terms and a glossary, and has other changes in each chapter. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
