WHY false reinforced knees?

I almost bought these in person because I loved the wash and they felt nice. That is, until I looked over them for a good long time and realized the reinforced knees are off center enough to be useless. I initially thought it must have been a mistake by the person who stitched the jeans, so I went online to try to buy them here. Now I can clearly see the false reinforcement is the actual design! Why would someone design a pair of jeans with reinforced knees that are non functional?? That makes zero sense to me! This is why I eventually chose not to buy these jeans.
