Volume 1 contains alphabetical entries A-D and also includes essays on the origins of the war, an overview of the war, and a summation of the legacy of the war. The next three volumes continue with alphabetical entries; in addition to entries T-Z, Volume 4 also gives information on medals and decorations, military organization, and rank structures, along with a chronology and glossary. Volume 5 offers about 400 pages documents, with a total of 241 documents, including excerpts from books, speeches, legislation, military documents, and government reports. The documents have been selected to reflect both diplomatic and military sources and to shed light on the domestic consequences of the war.
