Q: Is this comparably compatable to my exisiting centurylink c1000A modem?

submitted by Mike - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi, Mike! Regarding your question about the ARRIS SURFboard 32x8 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, Model SB6190 (White): This would not be a suitable replacement for that modem. That is a DSL modem. Q: What modem do I buy if I have 300mbps internet and the Google mesh router system? Thanks.

submitted by suzanne - 2 years ago
  • A: Any of these models are compatible with 300 Mbps service: SB6183, SB6190, SB8200 and S33. The SB6183 is a bit older so if you decide to increase your speed plan in the next year or so, it probably won't be the best choice. But the rest of the options are capable of supporting that speed plan or higher so they would probably be better choices for longevity.

Q: Will this work with Optimum Internet 400?

submitted by Gogo - 5 years ago
  • A: Hi, Gogo! Regarding your question about the ARRIS SURFboard 32X Cable Modem - White (SB6190): This is fully compatible with all cable modem internet providers, including Xfinity, Spectrum, Grande and your provider Optimum! If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact MyTGTtech at 877-698-4883 every day, between 7am-11pm CST.

Arris Surfboard SB6190

This was a replacement for the next model down that was ruined by a lightning strike. I decided to buy the next model in the SB lineup because mine was already 6 years old and I figured Arris might obsolete it or Charter Communications wouldn't support its use. Like all of Arris products, it was easy to unpack and install. Charter identified the new equipment and initialized it remotely. I was back up-and-running within 20 minutes.

Not a Good Modem

poofta - 3 years ago
This modem is not very reliable. Mine died after six months. When it worked, I had latency issues. I have learned of issues with the Intel chipset which the SB6190 has. Arris tech support is also very poor. I ended up buying another brand which performed better because I could not afford the 2-3 week downtime for Arris to send a warranty replacement.

Good concept, flawed execution

I bought this modem six years ago and it was very solid/stable. It did what it needed to. About a month or so ago I started getting random dropouts then it completely stopped working. Six years is a good run and I was planning to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.1 modem anyways, so I opened it up and found out what the failure was. The modem generates a lot of heat (which discolors the plastic case, fyi) and the heat sink on the processor is held on by plastic clips. Over time the heat, apparently weakened the plastic to the point they snapped and the heat sink fell off (it's mounted sideways). My guess is that the lack of the heat sink is why the modem started dropping out and then eventually fried. This is just poor manufacturing on an otherwise good product. If they ahd used metal screws, instead of plastic clips... I'd still be using mine today.

Installed this modem at our international denominational headquarters (11: work-stations, 2: emergency phone lines, 3: big-screen TV's and video security). We have had it installed for 2 years (powered through our UPS) and we have had to reboot the thing a grand total of 4 times. This beast is a rock-solid workhorse.

This is my 2nd SURFboard cable modem. The old one worked just fine except that in upgrading my internet speed, it was too much for the 8 year old modem. Since I was happy with the old modem, I didn't look at any other brands when purchasing a faster modem. Easy to set up and with a quick call to my internet provider, and it was up and running within a few short minutes. I am very happy with this cable modem!

Works Well So Far

5 out of 5 stars
Kjaray - 4 years ago, Verified purchaser
I've had it now for a couple of months. It has been reliable with connect so far. I like its small size, makes it easy to hide away in the living room. Set up is easy. If you have multiple pieces of hardware to connect to it, it may not be as easy of a set up as the instructions state. Still pretty painless, either way.

Does not work with Xfinity

I just bought this modem and Xfinity could not add it to my account, they told me that something was wrong with it from the manufacturer and to return it and get a different modem. After reading reviews, seems to have a common issue related to a bad chip and a lawsuit concerning this. Wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work, very disappointed. The surfboard modems used to be the best.

Upgrade from another SURFboard

I decided that after a long time, an upgrade from my SB6120 was due. Was looking to increase my speed, or at least have gigibit ethernet on my router so that I could take advantage of higher speeds. Installation for me was painless. I have Comcast, it is a supported router for them, called up, provided MAC, and less than 15 minutes up and running. Read a couple of reviews after I got it and, while my paid for internet speed is only 100 megabits, a far cry from what the actual modem can do, I see no tangible difference, but I wasn't expecting a giant speed boost, just a little. For me it is stable, but I do notice that the jitter is a little higher. If you look at my screen shot, the left of the large spike is the old modem, the right, new modem
