Q: Is this sunscreen reef safe?

A: The active ingredients are Zinc oxide 11.2%, Octinoxate 7.5%, Octisalate 5.0%. The octinoxate and octisalate are what you want to avoid. Oxybenzones are harmful, too. Try finding a sunscreen with mineral zinc oxide. Hope this helps!

At first I was so pleased because it rubs on smoother than other mineral sunscreens we have tried, and doesn’t have an unpleasant smell. But when reapplying, the first layer flakes off and the second layer doesn’t rub in at all- it just all starts peeling and is streaky and you can’t tell if you’re covering the skin. I had to wipe the first layer off my son before reapplying on him to ensure full coverage- and it’s a good thing I did. I used this sunscreen on myself as well that day and my mom noted the flaking as she reapplied to my back. She took a long time putting it on and said it just didn’t seem to rub in right. With the amount she used I figured the coverage would be sufficient so I didn’t worry about wiping off my first layer like I did for my son (you’re not supposed to have to do that…) well unfortunately I got terrible sunburn on my back that afternoon which I have not gotten even a hint of in years of using other mineral sunscreens. So disappointed in this formula and brand for flaking off when reapplying. For the price and being marketed for babies, it really needs to be better.

This is the sunscreen I use for my entire family, even the adults. We are extremely fair skinned and sensitive skinned. It’s worked great, we’ve used it on our bodies for years. We use a Bare Republic sheer mineral on our faces. Yes, it leaves a white cast on the skin because it’s a mineral sunscreen. It’s made to create a barrier and sit on the skin. I’m more worried about skin health rather than what we look like. Australians have been using mineral based sunscreen for years. We reapply every two(ish) hours. Since it is a mineral sunscreen it is possible for the product to separate a little bit in the tube. Gently shake and massage the tube before using. If you see only oil coming out at first then it’s not fully blended. It’s also possible that some people are using expired products. The expiration date is on the product. If it’s expired, it does not work as well. I have picked up the product off the shelf and noticed tubes were expiring soon. I think the negative reviews are from people who don’t understand how a mineral based sunscreen works. Also I prefer using a crème rather than a spray. An aerosol spray is not good for the environment or lungs. This sunscreen works for us every time.

Sunscreen is so important for everyone of all ages and this stuff definitely doesn’t inspire consistent use. Bad white cast but that’s not the worst part….it’s doesn’t rub in! It feels like chalk. I’m an hour into using it and it’s still so streaky and is rubbing off on my clothes, the car, everything! Go get a sunscreen that will make life easy and that you will be happy about using.

Reading the other reviews is a little disappointing. This sunscreen is awesome! I am medium skin toned and so is my toddler, but my baby and husband are very fair. I put this on all of them and no one walked away with a sunburn EXCEPT MAMA of course! I was busy applying sunscreen on everyone else I forgot to put some on me. The only spot I got was my tattoo on my upper arm before my toddler started to make a run for the water. My shoulders and back were burnt but where I put the sunscreen on was perfectly fine it’s crazy. There is a white cast but to me that just means there’s another layer protecting your children from the sun so I’m not bothered by it. I would rather them have that than a sunburn and in pain.
