@livingwithmace One very distinct memory from my childhood is my Britney Spears “Oops! I did it again” Barbie. I brought her with me everywhere. I was always extremely proud to tell everyone I share the same birthday as her. I even had every marionette NYSYNC doll from their “Bye Bye Bye” music video. If only my innocent self knew back then… Something that made me emotional while reading Britney’s memoir is how very little the public truly knows about individuals that are in the public eye. My fiancé and I just finished watching the Quiet on Set documentary and there’s a few quick photos of Britney and it discusses what these young kid stars went through. To be completely honest… I can’t really put into words how this book and this documentary made me feel. Emotional. Sad. Heart broken. Disgusted. Angry. Hopeless. Then after finishing this memoir, hopeful. A tiny light at the end of the tunnel. And I mean tiny. My heart shattered reading about what her family did to her. To read the things she went through. Her body being sexualized from a young age, everyone praising JT and blaming Britney, her family not allowing her to schedule doctor’s appointment to remove her IUD. Stealing her money. Controlling what she ate, when she ate. Tracking when she used the bathroom. When her father told her “I am Britney Spears now.” I wanted to throw my book across the room from anger. To tell any man before even a first date all of her sexual history. This woman worked so hard. She gave back to her family. She was an amazing Mom. A great wife. For what? To be sent away for nothing at all? To be locked up in rehab and her home for years on end? I commend her for telling her story how she experienced things, on her terms, through her eyes, sharing the thoughts that went through her head, and her healing journey. This was such a beautiful and heartbreaking memoir all at the same time. As always, no stars or rating for this one. As I don’t rate someone else’s journey that they choose to share with the world from their point of view. 🩷🥀🦋
