Manuela ha crecido en la pobreza. Hija de una lavandera y de un indeseable, ha sufrido las penurias de una ciudad donde el abismo entre las clases sociales es insalvable. Sin embargo, gracias a una vecina, Manuela tiene algo que la mayoría no posee: sabe leer. Cuando su madre muere y ella huye de un padre que quiere abusar de su poder y utilizarla, su camino se cruza con el de una joven escritora, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda.

Criada en una familia con medios, rebelde y sabiéndose siempre distinta a las jóvenes de su clase que únicamente aspiran a casarse y situarse en sociedad, Gertrudis no solo piensa en leer y escribir, sino que tiene la osadía de querer publicar. Logrará contactar con otras que, como ella, se saben diferentes y están dispuestas a hacer oír sus voces.
