@charcutereading 2023 was a slow reading year, but a big year in a lot of other ways. I don’t know what’s in store for 2024, but I’m always grateful for anytime spent reading. In no particular order, here are my 5⭐️ reads from 2023— The Last Love Note by emmagreyauthor - I thought this was going to be a rom com when I picked it up on a whim at target so I was wholly unprepared for the spiral of emotions this book put me through. I loved every minute of it though and I thought the sad part of the story was so well balanced with the joyful part. Hidden Potential by adamgrant - [Thanks to prhaudio for the gifted copy of this one.] I read more non fiction in 2023 than I ever have at any other point in my life thanks to the sharonsaysso book club, and I loved Hidden Potential so much that I immediately had my husband read it. Every few pages I was stopping to read him something I thought would resonate with him as someone who both coaches our kids in various activities and is at a turning point in his own career. I purchased at least 3 copies to give as gifts this holiday season as well. Tom Lake by Ann Patchett- came for Meryl Streep on the audio version of this book and stayed for the absolutely stunning picture Ann Patchett painted. I never wanted this one to end. Dual timelines is one of my favorite plot devices and I loved each time period equally. This book had me googling Michigan vacation rentals and where I could see Our Town. The Unmaking of June Farrow by adrienneyoungbooks - Magical realism, mystery, generational family drama, a little romance, this one truly has it all and it’s all extremely well done. I could not stop turning pages and when I ran out of pages to turn I was devastated. Worst book hangover of the year. None of This is True by lisajewelluk - I really did not think I would love this one as much as I did. I hate an unreliable narrator, but somehow this sucked me in anyway. It was completely unhinged and kept me on the edge of my seat. A thrilling ride in every way and a great example of why Lisa Jewell is an auto buy author for me—even when I think I’m out, she reels me in.

You may never stop loving the one you lost. But you can still find love again.

Kate is a bit of a mess. Two years after losing her young husband Cameron, she's grieving, solo parenting, working like mad at her university fundraising job, always dropping the ball--and yet clinging to her sense of humor.

Lurching from one comedic crisis to the next, she also navigates an overbearing mom and a Tinder-obsessed best friend who's determined to matchmake Kate with her hot new neighbor.

When an in-flight problem leaves Kate and her boss, Hugh, stranded for a weekend on the east coast of Australia, she finally has a chance, away from her son, to really process her grief and see what's right in front of her. Can she let go of the love of her life and risk her heart a second time? When it becomes clear that Hugh is hiding a secret, Kate turns to the trail of scribbled notes she once used to hold her life together.

The first note captured her heart. Will the last note set it free?

The Last Love Note will make readers laugh, cry, and renew their faith in the resilience of the human heart--and in love itself.

"At its core, The Last Love Note is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking. With vulnerability and honesty, Grey takes us through the entire spectrum of love. The novel is passionate and soulful, terrifying and devastating. The Last Love Note serves as a reminder that it really is better to have loved and lost than never loved at all."
--Bodhi Byles, Books & Publishing

"A moving portrait of love, loss and the messy emotions that live in between. And while Emma captures heart-wrenching scenes, the intimate prose is relatable, revealing and simply human. Yes, you will need tissues on hand--as well as a cuppa."
--HerCanberra

"The Last Love Note is a romcom both sparkling and heartbreaking in equal measure--we're invited into the story of Kate, grieving single parent, finds herself stranded with her boss in a sleepy hamlet, with only a trail of scribbled love notes to hold a secret from her past--that he's hiding."

"This book looks and sounds like a typical rom-com...But then it takes an unexpected left turn that elevates it to another level. To put it simply, this book was heartbreakingly beautiful and unexpectedly funny all at once and such a fantastic surprise.
