About this item

Highlights

 • The perfect soil for indoor and outdoor plants
 • Features BogBits® a recycled byproduct of peat moss harvest that helps air and nutrients flow to the roots.
 • Experience bigger blooms, healthier roots, and faster growth
 • All-natural, chemical-free, GMO-free, nut-free and vegan
 • Pine bark free because it breaks down quickly, making a potting mix dense

Description

Our award-winning potting mix is made with BogBits®, a byproduct of the regenerative peat harvesting process of sustainably managed peat lands. BogBits provide the structure to create the ideal porosity, ensuring air, nutrient, and water flow to the roots. BogBits do not break down so that Good Dirt can be reused season after season without losing the integrity and texture of the soil. Better than conventional potting mixes, Good Dirt does not contain pine bark which breaks down quickly and causes a potting mix to become dense or turn into muck inhibiting root growth. We also do not use manure. Simply put, Good Dirt® Potting mix is clean dirt. Safe for the entire family and not harmful to the environment. The peat moss used in Good Dirt is sustainably managed and regenerating faster than the rate of harvest. Dig with us… naturally!

Q: I'm concerned about toxoplasmosis. Could this dirt contain toxoplasmosis eggs? Thanks you!

submitted by EB - 1 year ago
 • A: Hello and thank you for reaching out. The answer is no. Good Dirt is a Vegan potting mix that does not contain meat or shellfish. In addition, we do not process meat or shellfish products in any of our facilities and keep tight controls on the sterility of our manufacturing sites.

Q: Is your potting soil safe to use with young children?

submitted by Deb - 3 years ago
 • A: Yes, absolutely. Our soil is chemical free, pathogen free, heavy metals-free, not petroleum based and nut free. All the ingredients are listed in our website. Our mix includes a plant food boosted that is derived from non-GMO oilseed extract and is 100% organic based. Safe for little helpers as well as pets.

Q: Is the potting soil sterilized?

submitted by Nikki - 3 years ago
 • A: No, there is no need to sterilize the Good Dirt potting mix. Our recipe is peat-based and essentially sterile. None of our mixes contain top soil or pine bark. If you are using it inside, we recommend you water lightly as the mix is designed to be water wise with the ideal balance of moisture and aeration for plants to thrive. One of the main reasons plants succumb to pests is overwatering, so make sure the top of the soil is dry at least 2” from the surface before watering and always plant in pots with drainage holes without rocks at the bottom of the planter. Same rules apply outdoors, though you may need to water more frequently depending on weather. Good Dirt is organic based from renewable plant materials.

Q: Is this good for tropical plants that require good drainage like philodendron, palms, monstera?

submitted by plantbih677 - 4 years ago
 • A: Yes, Absolutely! Our Potting mix is great for all plants, indoors and outdoors. Our exclusive BogBits, a proprietary recycled by-product of sustainably harvested peat moss, provides the permanent porosity that plants need to breathe and roots to thrive. Unlike pine bark-based mixes, BogBits do not break down overtime turning the soil dense.

Q: Does Good Dirt All Purpose Potting Mix have fertilizers in it?

submitted by Kate - 4 years ago
 • A: It has our organic based plant food booster. We recommend replenishing it each time you water by adding our Plant Food in the growing months.

Q: Is this the same as your indoor potting mix? I don't see the word "indoor" on the package like I do with the indoor potting mix on your website. Is what I can buy at Target good for seed starting indoors? Thanks.

submitted by Robin - 4 years ago
 • A: Yes, the Good Dirt Potting Mix is an all-purpose potting mix at Target. Great for Indoor and Outdoor Plants. You can use it for starting seeds in the same way you would use our Indoor Potting Mix. Happy Gardening!

Q: Is this product OMRI certified? You say all-natural and no chemicals, but is it organic?

submitted by jojo - 4 years ago
 • A: It is not OMRI certified. As a company we made the decision to not pursue the OMRI registration. We provide products that are 100% chemical free, non-GMO, heavy metals free, not salt-based, not petroleum-based. All our ingredients in our recipe are made from renewable resources and sustainably produced. Our peat moss is sustainably harvested and managed, the BogBits (our secret sauce) are a recycled byproduct equivalent to semi-petrified wood fibers that add permanent porosity. The soil also includes our Good Dirt organic-based Plant Food booster derived from oilseed extract which contains everything a seed needs to germinate and hence any plant to grow strong and it’s produced in a zero-waste manufacturing facility. Yes, it is organic, but not listed or certified organic. Safety Data sheets can be provided upon request. Thank you so much for your interest in Good Dirt!

Q: How can your peat moss be "sustainably harvested"? Harvesting peat moss releases tons of greenhouse gas and damages habitat.

submitted by Gillian - 4 years ago
 • A: Good Dirt soil recipes are crafted with Peat Moss is from Canada. Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss is regenerating more than 70 times faster than the rate of harvest. Several environmental agencies oversee all aspects of the peat bogs to insure a safe and sustainable ecosystem.

Good Dirt and our partners are committed to and practice sustainable peatland management. Our harvester is a member of the Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association and Veriflora certified. Their members have adopted a Preservation and Reclamation Policy that sets out the procedures for opening, harvesting and closing a bog to preserve the environment. Before harvesting: Record flora and fauna, Cooperate with environmental groups, Choose bogs for reserves. During harvesting: Minimize acreage, Leave buffer zone, Leave layer of peat moss, Design drainage so water can be restored. Post harvesting: Restore spent areas to peatlands, Reclaim to forestry, Reclaim to functioning wetland and/or wildlife sanctuary. Thank you for your question. We aim to create gardening products that are simple to use and sustainably produced so gardeners of all skill levels can make the most of their soil and plants.

I bought my soil last week. I repotted one plant in this soil and it’s already dying. I opened up my soil again today to repot another and there’s already mold. Sucks because I really wanted to like this brand.

This soil killed every plant I potted with it. Some i’ve had for years and the only three plants that i have left alive are the three I have not repotted since switching to this soil, so i do know for sure it was this obviously tainted soil. I quickly realized the remainder of the bag was white and moldy and all the potted plants where thick yellow and molded, two plans even grew mushrooms.

This is my first and last time purchasing this brand of dirt. I don't like that it has so many sticks and strings in it. I have to pluck out the big sticks as best I can. The small sticks are ok, but omg the strings are everywhere. The soil itself is ok and drains well. Besides that I am disappointed that my plants had to sit in whatever else is going on inside the bag. There were no mold, knats or other kinds of bugs in this bag, just sticks and stringy things for days.

I bought Good Dirt for the first time about two years ago and it's been my favorite ever since! A great mixture for good drainage. There have been a few large stems (more like small branch pieces it seemed) but it's not a hassle to just take them out. Never had a gnat or mold issue in all of the bags I've purchased, never left my pots in water long enough for them to mold. Their plant food is great with this, also.

This is FABULOYS!!!! Amazing dirt, lots for what you get. This doesn’t have any plant food in it or really any beneficial particles so keep that in mind you will need to add something in or fertilize at home. It is a little dense so I always add in additional drainage. Only thing is that it’s full of sticks, I wouldn’t mind if they were cut into half inch segments but some of them are like 3/4 inches long

This is the best potting soil I’ve used. It helped my plants become healthy, strong and super fast growing. It’s not full of sticks and stones either. I’m bummed that it’s out of stock and hoping that I can get more soon! It’s hard to find in my local target stores as well. Bring this back!!!

this stuff is perfect for topping off planters that have sunk or decomposed it has great nutrients and has been shifted to save me time from doing it myself it holds moisture perfectly also add it to your own mix I'm not sure why anyone would complain about it unless they think it is just pour into pot and stick a plant into it ?

It’s not the worst soil i’ve ever bought. The soil does have a lot of sticks and mulch in it, so it holds moisture for a very long time and it’s very easy to get fungus gnats.

At first I thought this soil was great, I noticed my plants immedately take to it as I paired this with the liquid fertilizer. After some time, I realized there were small white bugs in it! I couldn't tell as the soil also has white in it. I know it's this soil because I only 2 of my many plants and these are the only ones with the bugs and are suffering. I've tried spray but will just have to repot, hoping that they survive. I think the same branded fertilizer is the only thing that has kept them alive this time. Would avoid the soil and just stick with the liquid growth fertilizer.
