Q: Hi there. Do these distribute wifi on different levels of a home? If so, do you need one for each level?

submitted by Bueller - 4 years ago
  • A: Hi, Bueller! Regarding your question about the Google Nest Wifi Router and Point (2 pack): Great question! These mesh Wi-Fi routers are perfect for larger homes that either have multiple levels, or a large floor level. One on each level of the home would provide more than adequate coverage. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact MyTGTtech at 877-698-4883 every day, between 7am-11pm CST.

  • A: The Wi-Fi signal coverage and distribution will depend on the size of your home, your Wi-Fi speed and the signal strength. The signal can be affected by interference caused by thick walls, mirrors, windows and signals from other wireless devices present. You may set up your Nest Wifi devices strategically like placing them on the middle floor of your home and within a clear line of sight to your connected devices to get the best signal coverage and optimal performance.

Nest wifi

5 out of 5 stars
Fernando M - 2 years ago

I have purchased two nest routers and 6 points, for two different properties. I recommend the this mesh system because it is very easy to set up overall. It allows you to set a guest network with a separate password. It works well with other nest or goggle products like doorbells, cameras, lights, etc. The only issue is the Google home app which links and controls all the devices, router, cameras, thermostats tv’s, has some kinks to work out. Goggle bought out nest and combined the nest app with goggle home and sometimes its has hic-ups. Overall it is a great product with excellent coverage and I will continue to buy this product for other homes in the future.

Worst Router I Have Ever Owned

Verified Purchaser - 2 years ago
I bought this router and started having issues with it about 6 months in. After talking with support 3 - 4 times a day they are unable to help me and never get back to me after they escalate the issue. After a year of regularly troubleshooting this and hoping that an engineer would look at logs I sent to them they never got back to me. They eventually agreed to replace the system after almost 2 years of issues and then told me that my product was out of warranty even though I had originally reached out while still under warranty. Do not buy this router or anything google it is not reliable at all. My Nest hub screen went out just after the warranty expired and the remote for my google TV needs to be replaced for the second time due to buttons going out.

This mesh router increases my Wifi connection rate from 100+ mbps to 400+ Mbps. Great performance. There are only basic features and less features than my former ASUS router such as USB drive hosting, printer connection. I wish they develop a GUI web interface to make it easy to use. There is no advanced wireless parameters, no performance plot, no admin password, no way to save configuration to file. Features may not be adequate for advanced user, but for home user the Wifi throughput is great.

Worked well while it lasted, but that wasn't long. After just a year and half we are already needing to buy a replacement. This was not cheap - 5 months out of warranty and an hour on the phone with customer service running tests we were told the hardware is bad and we need to replace it.

Defective Unit? Or Defective Design?

GoldenRetreiverDad - 2 years ago
We purchased the 2 pack Nest Wifi Mesh router as a replacement for our older Apple AirPort Extreme. We could never get it to function properly, eventually returning it to the store. I'm digitally native, fairly technically competent and work in a technical field (engineer). These routers could not consistently maintain an internet signal. We have Xfinity internet. I imagine this is a very common setup in many homes using Nest routers. We tried the router with two customer owned modems, an older Arris DOCSIS 3.0 unit that has worked perfectly with the AirPort for about 6 years (can't remember the last time it even needed a restart) and a brand new Arris DOCSIS 3.1 modem. We contacted Xfinity each time before switching to be sure they were activated in their system and receiving an internet signal. The router had the same issue of not being able to obtain/maintain an internet connection with both modems. I had to call technical support 3 separate times over the short time we had this unit. In the end, they blamed Xfinity, who in turn blamed Arris. But given that we had the same router issue with two separate Arris modems, and that each time when we reconnected our old AirPort, everything worked fine again, the variable here clearly is the Google Nest router. The Google Home app, which controls the device, is cumbersome. It's designed for ease of use, but this also means it's a "black box" with minimal user control should adjustments be needed. I'm still not sure if the issue we had was hardware or software related, but in the end it doesn't really matter as Very glad I was able to get a refund and try a router from another manufacturer. If you do plan to purchase one of these, in addition to price shopping, be sure to pay attention to the return window the retailer you're purchasing it from allows. We found national retailers vary from 15 days to 90 days. If a defect doesn't immediately present itself, in my experience, Google's warranty isn't where you want to be stuck, so those extra days may end up being valuable.

I have only had it in place for a couple of weeks and it seems to be strong. A little miffed that you can't run the system in bridge mode with mesh coverage. I think this is short-sighted. I would like this to be a wireless extension of my wired network. I had a Deco from TP-Link that could but then again it seems to die annually. After my second time at the rodeo I have had enough. The connectivity is good though.

Without the mesh point, it worked great. Had it for about a year that way. Once I added the mesh, it all went downhill. Even if I remove the mesh point, the router does not revert back to how great it was working before.I've restarted, reset, factory reset... you name it! Nothing helps.Google it and you'll see it is an issue that Google has not fixed, despite knowing about it.
1 reply from Google Customer Care team - 3 years ago
Hi vincentpaul33, thanks for sharing your experience. We regret to learn that you’re experiencing connectivity issues with your Nest Wifi. You may need to restart your modem, even if your modem appears to be working fine, to establish a secure connection to the Wi-Fi point. Wi-Fi signal and connectivity will still depend on other factors like interference, multiple devices using both bandwidths on your router and the older Wi-Fi chips on your devices that might not be able to support these speeds. If you're using a modem/router combo, set it in bridge mode and disable its Wi-Fi functionality to avoid double NAT issues. We also suggest these simple steps that might help: - Move the connected device closer to your Wifi router or point. - Repositioning the points to avoid obstructions like walls, doors, and aquariums can improve performance. - Make sure all unused devices are off and not draining bandwidth with large downloads. - Check for possible sources of interference such as microwave ovens, refrigerators or other equipment. - Run a mesh test to confirm placement of your Wifi points. If the issue persists, we’re hoping to learn more about your feedback so we can figure out a way to help improve your experience. If you’re willing to get in touch and share more details about this, you may contact us anytime here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Sometimes the POINTS and/or ROUTER requires “factory reset” often. NOT reliable as my cheap Linksys single node router that lasted reliably for over 6 years. I’ve heard Netgear
1 reply from Google Customer Care team - 3 years ago
Hi Peter Paul, thanks for sharing your experience. We regret to hear that you have to reset your Nest Wifi router and points multiple times. If you haven’t yet, we recommend trying out some tips below to help isolate the issue: - As a general rule, points work best when they’re no more than two rooms away from each other. For example, if the far end of your house has weak Wi-Fi, don’t put a Wifi point in that exact spot. Instead, put it part way in that direction. Try to place it in an elevated position like on a shelf. - Building materials and other objects located between your Nest Wifi Points and mobile devices may slow your connection. If possible, try to use your device within a clear line of sight to your primary and secondary Points. - There could be signal interference due to traffic on your Wi-Fi network, on your neighbors' Wi-Fi networks, or from other sources like microwaves or baby monitors. If you'd like us to take a look at the issue, feel free to contact our support team so we can help you further.
