Q: What are the ingredients? How environmentally friendly is it?
submitted by herbalgerbil - 4 years ago
A: It has roughly the same ingredients as any other detergent, but this comes in a cardboard box with a tiny metal spout instead of a huge tub of plastic like gels and pods come in. Powders are likely the most sustainable option available. Older detergents included phosphates which caused a lot of environmental damage by feeding algal blooms, but most detergents on the market today do not contain phosphates.
(As an aside, phosphates were never intended as a cleaning agent. Their purpose was to soften water, and there are more efficient, more environmentally friendly additives that do the same thing. I bring this up to the grumpy people out there who erroneously believe phosphates "wash better".)
From the back of the box (with added comments):
Sodium sulfate (surfactant, dissolves oil into water; also found in shampoo and soaps)
Sodium carbonate ("washing soda", found in plant ashes)
Sodium silicate (strong base/water softener, a salt of silica)
Alcohol alkoxylate (surfactant, derived from sugar)
Sodium percarbonate ("OxiClean", dissolves into washing soda, water, and oxygen)
Acrylic acid/sulfonate copolymer/terpolymer (film prevention, keeps everything dissolved to be rinsed away easily)
Maleic/olefin copolymer (film prevention and water softening)
Tetrasodium etidronate (stabilizer; also found in liquid soaps, shampoos, and contact lens cleaner)
Subtilisin (enzyme, breaks down protein, found in soil bacteria)
Amylase (enzyme, breaks down starch; also found in your saliva)
Fragrance (lemony smell)

A: very friendly. I added a 1/2 tsp to glass of water, couldnt even taste it.
I prefer powder detergent in my counter top dishwasher, this fits the bill. I usually use the powder from dollar tree but it's not always available so i was excited to find this option only slightly more expensive (per ounce) Delivery from target was very easy and convenient and they wrapped the soap separately. It does have a stronger scent than I'd choose but it doesn't linger, rinses clear

I bought this box 7 months ago and I still have plenty (I run the dishwasher every day too.) I can’t believe how long it’s lasting. I still have about 1/3 of the box

This dishwasher powder is a great price, smells nice, and will last a long time. Powder is much more cost effective than pods or liquid dishwasher detergent. I read a lot of reviews that this left residue on dishes and glasses but I have never had that issue. I’ve only ever bought powder detergent and grew up using it, too. The key is to add way less than you think you need. A tablespoon is plenty!

I have used this for decades. I have had the fortune of soft city water both in Colorado and now in Austin. I don't use a lot, just as others have explained, and since moving to Austin I find I don't need any rinse as well. It will build up on your dishes and glasses if you use too much, just cut your usage in half. I also want to add my name to the list of people who like the cardboard box. Easy to recycle, just pull off the metal piece. I also run my dishwasher every day and one box will last me a year.

Cleans better than the name brands AND is a lot more affordable. I like the lemony scent. Is it just me or do my glasses have a lot less water spots on them.

Great for the price. We use just a little bit- it goes a long way. If you use too much it leaves a film on your stuff.

Great detergent to clean toilets, sinks & floors.
5 out of 5 stars
O - 2 months ago, Verified purchaser
This is a good product. I do not use it for its intended purpose but I use it as the title says: to clean toilets, kitchen sinks & my kitchen terracotta floors. I soak the porcelain toilets & cast iron sinks overnight & in the morning the are sparkling clean. Wish they would be better priced as I use them quite a bit.

Smells great but think it’s clogging our dishwasher, as would any powder. Going to buy the liquid version.

Works better in my new dishwasher than pods or Cascade. It doesn't seem to pit glass as the other more expensive detergent.

We switched to this from Cascade a month or so ago and besides saving a ridiculous amount of money, it works great, smells great (only lemon afaik) and lasts forever compared to the pods. Dishes are clean, saves money.
