Review Quotes

Seven years ago, Maria Buscombe disappeared from her home in British Columbia after discovering she was adopted and the names of her birth parents. She left behind an embittered husband and a confused daughter who blamed herself for her mother's absence. Now Maria has returned home just long enough to see her daughter for a brief, shocking moment and then, a few hours later, to be murdered. Inspector Karl Alberg of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police traces back over five decades of snarled genealogy to find the killer. Alberg is also dealing with his relationship with Cassandra Mitchell, who, after being kidnapped and nearly killed, is terrified of being alone. Over the course of 11 novels, Wright has become a master of the psychological thriller. Her characters are totally recognizable people whose actions are the result of complex motivations and who strive to rebuild their lives on the rubble of too many demolished dreams. Powerful reading for all readers, not just mystery fans.--George Needham "Booklist"
