HISTORY ASPECTS: The Northrup P-61 Black Widow is a twin-engine, twin-boom fighter aircraft manufactured by Northrup Corporation. It was used by United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) squadrons during World War II. It was the first USA warplane equipped with airborne radar and was designed from the ground up as a night fighter primarily tasked to intercept the Luftwaffe bombers attacking London at night. Lady in the Dark of the 548th Night Fighter squadron was probably the most famous Black Widow of the War. Credited as the last scoring plane of WWII, the Lady achieved this last victory without firing a shot, but by forcing two imperial Japanese fighters into the sea on the night of 15 August 1945.
