Q: I originally had a bottle that was smooth, thick butter. I would have to dig it out with a little spoon. The bottle I opened today had small beads in it. Wondering if this is new to make it easier to use or if this one is compromised!?

A: Shea Butter will have that grainy texture due to its fatty acid composition. When it melts, cools, then solidifies, the speed at which it cools helps determine its consistency. If it cools quickly, the solids don't have time to form and appears smooth. If it cools slowly, the fatty acids will crystallize, giving the appearance of grains. We recommend warming the product in your hands to help soften the butter, allowing you to apply smoothly to hair and skin. Another option you can try is running it under warm water to melt the butter, then stir the contents. You will then want it to cool faster so maybe putting it in the fridge after it has melted instead of leaving it at room temperature. With either variation, because of its natural tendencies, the texture will vary each time it is melted and cooled.

I was tempted to return as my jar was gritty when I purchased it. After googling and look at reviews I found that warming it up for 1 minuet and 30 seconds, stirring it and cooling overnight in the freezer smooths it out. Many people aren’t used to natural products which I can see why there are low ratings. Natural is better.

This stuff is BEYOND AWFUL! I tried to force myself to use it, but I can't tolerate the gritty mess!! On two different occasions I tried allowing the Shea butter to warm in the palm of my hands -- I was almost compelled to place it in the microwave to get it to melt. Save your money!

this is perfect exactly as it is. don't ever change it. my skin and hair need it. it's easy to use and it is exactly what it's supposed to be. please never change it, I might cry, it's perfect. I have extremely sensitive skin and scalp and it doesn't cause me any irritation, and my hair looks amazing and it's getting close to my waist now. it protects my hair well, and makes my skin so soft.

Not sure what all these bad reviews are about, I will have to assume that they have never used pure shea before, or perhaps thought they were getting a body creme vs pure shea butter.... I use it to make body creme with (as one ingredient of, not as a stand alone cream) and I loved it!! To respond to some of the reviews which had me potentially concerned: I did not find any glittery sheen to it, and it definitely seems to be pure shea butter as advertised! All pure shea butter will always be crumbly/"hard", totally normal! Very good product

First time using raw shea butter. Thankful for the other reviews saying to heat it up to get rid of the gritty texture. Otherwise I would have been very disappointed. It never feels like it’s full absorbed for me, so I’m a little concerned about my clothes and sheets. However it might be worth how much it’s helping my winter skin already. Trying to figure out a scent I can add to make it smell a little better. It’s sort of a nutty earthy smell, which I do prefer over a perfume smell.

This product surpasses anything I have used for my pregnancy, specifically belly regions. I was suffering from very irritated dry skin that was breaking out into a rash. ONE use and it changed over night. My skin feels amazing and my dry skin/rash has faded. Yes it is grainy, but the trick to smoothe it out is to microwave it until fully melted, and put in the freezer, (I did overnight) and it comes out just like butter. It becomes grainy due to the fatty vitamins and the temperature it is exposed to! I will forever use this product in my home.

This is one of the best purchases I've made from Target. Its shea butter, so it hardens when it gets cold but it melts almost immediately after rubbing it on your skin. I transferred some into a glass jar and melted it in the microwave so it is quicker and easier to apply. I've been using this shea butter for 2 weeks and my skin is so moisturized and softer than its been in years! My skin, especially my hands, used to crave lotion and looked and felt so dry but since using this stuff, I literally don't apply lotion throughout the day. I apply it at night before bed and thats it! Don't hesitate on this; your skin will seriously thank you!

This Shea butter seems to have some additives which are not listed. It’s grainy and it glistens on my skin (doesn’t get absorbed smoothly like true Shea butter that I had bought in bulk apothecary). The SheaMoisture one has an oily, glittery sheen to it and I have tiny bumps on the skin where it was applied.

I generally like Shea Moisture products but this one needs reformulation! It is rock solid and crumbles upon use. I warmed it in the microwave and stirred in quite a bit of pure glycerin, hoping to soften it, but it’s still a hard solid. Too difficult to use as a body cream and a total waste of money. This is my second purchase of this product because unfortunately I forgot how awful it is!

This is a tricky product because it’s pure, Raw & All natural. Bottom line, it’s PURE Shea raw butter. With that said I strongly believe Shea Moisture needs to update the usage and pre-use technique. This little miracle jar needs to be warmed in the microwave until semi melted into liquid. Stir just a bit and pop in the freezer for about an hour. It’s silk like glass after and works like a charm. People who don’t know how to work with this product has brought the reviews down, so much I actually contemplated buying it. After reading and following a few reviews which mentions the pre melting process it was a beautiful experience after. SUPER luxurious. I melted my jar and put it in a glass jar so you can see how translucent it is after melting. I also put a small amount of my favorite essential oil and it gave it an amazing scent. DO THIS!

I'm using this shea butter to help with the hydration of a zone with old scars and it made wonders right after the first use: the skin looks much more uniform, feels soft, and the itching is nearly gone! The uniformity of the butter was an issue before reading the reviews: in my case the it was layered and really hard, I had to use a spoon to scrape a little bit. The recommended treatment (melt, stir, freeze) worked like a charm! I'm sure this butter would get better reviews if the manufacturer clearly stated that the melt-stir-freeze treatment is needed before first use due to being a raw product without additives to homegeize it or stabilize it.

It has these balls that don’t melt. But what I end up doing was scooping it all out of the container heating it up and when I did that the balls one away. After that I was able to use it normally. If you’re not willing to do that and I don’t recommend this product. But if you are it is a good source of moisturizer for the skin and sometimes I’ve used it on my daughters hair.
