Q: Kit package and answer on previous inquiry indicate only 2 geodes but one of the pictures, when you tap on "more", shows boy holding about 8+rocks. Are there more than 2 rocks with only 2 being geodes...or only 2 rocks in box?

Q: How many gems are in package? Do you have to dig them out of rocks or are they just scattered where no digging is involved?

My kids love these dig kits, but I have love/hate relationship with them because they can be messy. We chose to do this one outside, but honestly, we could have done this on a tablecloth inside the house, as it wasn't quite as messy as some others we've tried. The tools hold up very well and my girls were able to get a decent amount of gems from the kit.

Love educational toys! This fits the bill! My 8 year old grandaughter loves to learn about rocks and mining practices. This was fun and rewarding. I would, however, suggest doing this activity outside, for easiest clean up. I recommend it!

Who doesn't love gem mining and finding their own treasure? This Smithsonian Rock and Gem Dig makes it a lot of fun to do at home and everyone gets their own treasures when they're done. The set is marked for ages 8 and up, but that up doesn't have a limit. It's a lot of fun to set this up on the patio with friends and just see what we can get!

Smithsonian Rocks!!!

Over this kit was great! Came with wooden tools that didn't break, and the brick was not too hard to break up all tho it does take some time to break open and find all of the gems. We had gotten two kits to see which would be better for the kids and this was my pick, it even came with a large poster with so much information on Rocks and gems, how to identify them and even the different types of rocks and how they form. Another kit we tried was extremely difficult to break open and came with plastic tools so hands down Smithsonian did an awesome job. If you want something inexpensive and fun to do with your kids this is a great fun learning experience for all!!! Just fyi parents it is a lot of hammering and pounding noises and sand gets everywhere so probably an outside game day! Now we've got 10 awesome gemstones to identify!!!.£

Little Rocks, Big Fun

We received this toy for free in exchange for an honest review. We did this activity, took roughly 30 minutes to get the gems out and sorted with little kids. While we did this activity with 3, 5, and 10 years, watching the littles is very important due to the sizes of gems. All were smaller than a dime. They were excited to find treasure. Can be messy, recommend outdoor digging where you can then wash away with hose.

I always feel confident gifting Smithsonian toy sets. My 3 sons have received many over the years and they're always educational as well as fun, which I appreciate most. The Rock and Gem Dig Kit is a cute little taste of rocks and minerals and will definitely spark curiosity. Fun that there are little keepsakes at the end.

My kids and I are all rock hounds. I have a full collection of crystals and we scour the beach for the cool stones, but we've always wanted to dig for real gemstones. I'd love to dig for crystals in Arizona, but until I get there, the Smithsonian Gem and Rock Dig is the next best thing. This fun set comes with a slate of clay you can dig and chip away at until you unearth real gemstones. The kit makes for hours of fun and really kept my kids entertained. Once they were finished they had a dozen different gemstones in all different shapes and colors. It comes with everything you need, but if you use it inside, I suggest putting it under a cookie tray or something else that will make it easy to clean up because it does create a lot of dust. This is a great way to keep kids entertained on a rainy summer day!

I received this product in exchange for my honest review. Smithsonian Rock and Gem Dig Kit includes a decent collection of colorful gems and minerals and all the tools needed to dig them up in the sand block. It's better to be played outside if you don't want to clean up the mess left behind. My boys enjoyed the process of discovery very much and had great fun getting their hands dirty in the field.

My 10 year old son loves rocks and gems. He picked this out at the store and he's happy because the package says you'll get 11 gemstones and he got 15. BUT the photo on the box makes them look bigger than they actually are. They are tiny and not near as vibrantly colored as you'd hope.
1 reply from NSI Product Support Team team - 3 months ago
We're glad your son had fun with the kit. We're sorry you're disappointed with the size of the gems. Rocks and gems are heavy, which means the bigger they are, the more expensive the shipping, so we'd have to factor that into our pricing. We are aiming to give kids more rocks and gems to identify, without having the kit be too pricey.

My son received this kit as a gift and he really "rocked out" while he was busy "digging in" to his Rock and Gem Dig Kit. He was able to use the tools in the kit to tap away at the sand block gradually revealing an assortment of hidden treasures. Discovering and identifying was both an educational and entertaining activity best done outdoors. Ideal for ages 8 and up, included in the Rock and Gem Dig kit are an imprinted, pressed sand block hiding 11 gemstones, minerals or rocks, a wooden mallet and dowel, goggles, a streak plate, magnifying glass, pouch and informative color poster with instructions.

Stones is an exaggeration

I bought this in the store without reading reviews. It’s a bit of a joke. 1/3 of the package is empty cardboard, there’s a pair of plastic glasses and a small wood chisel and hammer. So what you get is a small brick of sandstone. And it is smaller than your average actual brick. Inside ours was a bunch of tiny colored rocks a little bigger than the size of Cheerios. The kids were excited because I hid the block in the sandbox without showing them the box. If I had, I’m sure it would’ve been disappointing. My daughter soaked the block in water first which cuts down on the mess just slightly. Definitely an outside activity and not worth the price overall except perhaps for the wood hammer, chisel, and glasses. Maybe they could make a refill set with more stones and none of the tools and that could make more sense. Overall pass unless you’re desperate.
