I love this thing! I had wanted a pretty le-creuset dutch oven, but couldn't afford one. I recently started baking my own no-knead bread and the recipe calls for a dutch oven, so i borrowed this one from a friend. It's great! It is pretty dang heavy, but it makes the most perfect bread! My husband is going right now to get one of our own. I haven't tried anything other than bread, but I'm excited to try chili's and soups in this thing!

Perfect

I had wanted one of the cute enameled ones, but received this as a gift from my grandmother as a wedding present. Her philosophy was that the enameled ones may look good, but they will eventually chip, so why bother? Anyways, turns out that I do just love this one. Makes lovely loaves of bread, pots of soup, just everything.

Love it!

I got this item as a bridal shower gift. I had registered for it after my friend (who bought me the gift) brought hers to our chili cookoff. This product is great! It's very heavy (not for the weak wristed) and not dishwasher safe, but it is excellent, cleaned very easily, heated the food evenly, and looks great. I'm looking forward to using it for camping too, but I'm really loving it indoors as well.

Economically gourmet!

I have always seen those food chefs with the large, enameled braisers/dutch ovens in which they seem to cook a lot of different items; many of them say they are an indispensable tool in the kitchen. But these particular cookware items were always so darn expensive! I was reminded that they are just enamel coated cast iron, and perhaps I should try just a raw cast iron pot...Whoa.First off, I cook (regrettably) on an electric cooking range with those horrid little electric burners. I am a big fa n of making vegan chili, and have thus far been content to use a 5 qt stainless steel pot - I start with my onion in the pot, turn on the heat, and in about a minute or so, we get to browning. So I follow suit once I got this heavy beauty out of the box...... I couldn't believe that in LESS than 30 SECONDS... my onions were sizzling. This thing heats up like a dream... and on top of that, it cooks more evenly than the stainless steel. I was nervous that all that was just a preface to a crusty, burnt base once the chili was gone, but a swipe or two in some warm water with a scrubber... it was clean as the second I pulled it out of the box.I LOVE my cast iron, and I am thinking of investing in more; it really seems to bring out the gourmet in me, and if it can do it for me, it can do so for ANYONE.

If you're looking for a dutch oven, this is the one. I've tried the expensive Le Creuset (not worth the extra $$$). I've even tried the lodge enamel dutch oven (also not worth the extra $$$ and those are made in China - this one is made in the USA). Cast iron is not nearly as picky to take care of as I was afraid it would be. You won't be disappointed with this dutch oven. Highly recommend!

Like many others, I am obsessed with Jim Lahey's No-Knead Bread Recipe popularized by Mark Bittman's "Minimalist" column in the New York Times. Only after the bread I makde surpassed my wildest expectations did I decide to forego the makeshift frying pan-casserole dutch oven combo I was using, in favor of a dutch oven. But what kind? I own pieces of the very high end enamel cast iron as well as cheaper "naked" cast-iron. I have discovered that the enamel pieces may look pret tier but once naked cast iron is seasoned, there is nothing I'd rather use. I opted for this dutch oven and have been delighted. Yes, I've made some fantastic no-knead bread loaves, but I've also braised chicken and some vegetables that were amazing. The only drawback is the weight of this thing. It is heavy and even heavier when filled with liquid. Yet, the results are excellent. The pan says it comes pre-seasoned, and it is, sorta. You will have to spend some more time adding more seasoning layers by oiling it and heating in the oven, but the more it is used, the better the seasoning will be. A seasoned cast iron pan is a joy forever!
