About the Book

Capturing the unrivaled passion and candor that made him one of America's bestselling solo recording artists, this collection of poetry offers a glimpse into Shakur's enigmatic life and its intense contradictions.

Book Synopsis

Tupac Shakur's most intimate and honest thoughts were uncovered only after his death with the instant classic The Rose That Grew from Concrete.

His talent was unbounded a raw force that commanded attention and respect.
His death was tragic--a violent homage to the power of his voice.
His legacy is indomitable--as vibrant and alive today as it has ever been.

For the first time in paperback, this collection of deeply personal poetry is a mirror into the legendary artist's enigmatic world and its many contradictions.

Written in his own hand from the time he was nineteen, these seventy-two poems embrace his spirit, his energy--and his ultimate message of hope.

About the Author

Tupac Shakur recorded twelve landmark albums -- nine of which went either platinum or gold. A consummate actor, he also appeared in six major motion pictures, including Poetic Justice, Juice, GridLock'd, and Gang Related. He was murdered at the age of twenty-five.

Pleasantly surprised- I bought this for a teenager.

I bought this for a teenager who is into the "gangsta" stuff, and reviewed it before I gave it to her (I was suspicious because I know of Tupac's reputation and was prepared to take it back if I found it to be vulgar or in bad taste). However, to my surprise it was very appropriate and something a teenager could definitely relate to. Some of his poetry is about how lost he felt, relationships with others, and how badly he wanted respect. Overall my thoughts are, if you're getting a teenager to read poetry, you can't really go wrong. I used his poem in a classroom once- I took three famous classic poems and one poem by Tupac, and asked teens to figure out who wrote which poem. Most of the students guessed wrong. When you open the book you see on the left side is a copy of his handwritten poems and on the right is each poem typed out.
