Q: What is the best age for this and is it reusable?

submitted by Cathy - 7 months ago
  • A: Thank you for your question. The National Geographic Crystal Garden Science Kit is suitable for any child over 8 years old. Once you place the trees in the crystal growing solution, you will see crystals start to form. If your crystals fall off, simply add them back to the tree base with a little water and regrow your tree! You can also try removing the grown crystal solution, allow the tree to dry and add more washable marker coloring before adding the crystals back to the base of the tree with additional water.

submitted by Martha - 2 years ago
  • A: Our Crystal garden kit does not contain any crystals. It does contain 2 packets of liquid crystal solution for your use in creating your own crystal growing trees.

My 6 year old loves these kits. I like to give these as gifts too. They are so fun, educational, and get more use than toys.

It’s more of a soft foam like substance as opposed to crystals. They fell off easily and didn’t pick up at much color as we hoped. Should have came with the dropper to apply liquid to trees but I’m not convinced that was the issue.

Does Not "Crystallize"

Lonicofo - 6 months ago, Verified purchaser
Not crystals- it’s just a powdery foam that turns to dust and falls off when you touch it. Never actually crystallized hard. Takes forever to color for a disappointing result.

It grows but it’s not crystals. Very powdery substance that falls off of them. Kids will not be able to keep it. You are supposed to throw away the next day.

Major Disappointment

CamiSpami - 10 months ago
I’ve never seen my 6 year old more disappointed and upset about a project in my life. She had a science fair project at camp. We did this the day before since instructions say it takes 6-8 hours for crystals to form. They formed only on the edges of the branches on only one tree, the other did not form at all. What did form ended up crumbing off during the car ride. When she got to school the office called me that she was inconsolable because the tree was almost bare. Also, these do not look like crystals, it’s more like dry foam with no sparkle.

Coloring was a bit of a pain, and some of the markers were running out of color (green) by the time we were finishing but the resulting product was beautiful and just like the picture on the box. I had visitors inquiring where we got the kit. I'd highly recommend. Note that you'll have to throw them away after a few days, as the crystals fall off of the deteriorating paper.

These are not crystals. Its a powdery substance that falls off the trees and disintegrates when touched. Very dissapointing for kids. My granddaughter bought this with her own money. Nat Geo should give a refund.

Easy instructions and the tree began to grow crystals within an hour. I think the more color is added to tree or more vibrant the colors the better result.

Crystals are so fragile they crumble to dust at the slightest movement of the tray. Unless you plan on keeping this in a glass case, don’t waste your money. Horribly disappointing for kids. Lots of work to color the trees. They do grow fast but that excitement is short-lived.
