  • A: The tumbler, upon use, can hold more than 1 pound, but sort of lets the rocks slide, although this isn't a problem for softer minerals such as fluorite.

submitted by boymom3 - 3 months ago

Q: Can you use any rocks found in nature in this or only the rocks included?

submitted by Cobb1 - 2 years ago
  • A: Yes, you can use any rock found in nature. Keep in mind that not all rocks will result in a good final polish. Tumbled stones with a fantastic polish do not happen by chance. Rocks that work well in a rock tumbler usually have a smooth, uniform texture that is free of fractures, voids and soft spots.

Q: What is the power consumption (wattage or amperage) when this is running? Thanks!

submitted by Beedubdub - 2 years ago
  • A: Hello Beedubdub - .The Hobby Rock Tumbler runs on 12v 500mA power wall watts and only pull about 200mA to run them. This takes .3 Amps, so (watts = amps x volts) OR watts = .3 x 110 which equals 33 watts. .

Q: How long do the rocks tumble for? And how much noise does the machine make?

submitted by Lady Lake Jack - 2 years ago
  • A: Hello. Tumbling rocks is a lot of trial and error. You should expect about 4 weeks for great polishing results. Our kits include 4 stages of grit and each has a unique purpose that helps speed up what takes nature thousands or even millions of years to accomplish. Suggested Tumbling Times: Grit #1: 3–5 days (until the stones have all lost their sharp edges and feel smooth) Grit #2: 6–8 days Grit #3: 6–8 days Grit #4: 7–10 days (the long polishing time will help you get the best results) The National Geographic Hobby Rock Tumbler runs at 74 decibels.

Q: how long does it take to tumble he rocks

submitted by Jacob - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi Jacob, Oceans and rivers take thousands or even millions of years to produce polished stones. This rock tumbler speeds up that process, but you should still expect about 4 weeks of tumbling for great polishing results. Suggested Tumbling Times: Grit #1: 3–5 days (until the stones have all lost their sharp edges and feel smooth). Grit #2: 6–8 days. Grit #3: 6–8 days. Grit #4: 7–10 days (the long polishing time will help you get the best results)

This thing is extremely loud. Can be heard through the walls in the house, and it was driving my husband and I crazy. Finally settled for putting it in the garage. Be aware that this machine runs NON STOP for at least three weeks. You are living with this noise for almost a month, not to mention the waste of energy. Not worth it!! I was happy to throw it in the trash when it was over.

Works good. The whole process is a little long. My 9 year old is still excited to see the end result but 6 year old lost interest. Takes about a month to go through each step.

We didn’t even make it through the second cycle of the first batch of rocks. It quit. So disappointing! It was a Christmas gift and my kids are so bummed. Don’t waste your money.

The National Geographic Rock Tumbler Hobby Edition is solid and higher I'm quality than I expected. The process was very simple and my 8 year old had no trouble adding the rocks, grit, water and starting it up for the first time. I recommend this tumbler; It is a great value for the money.

Like many of the other reviews, this died during the second batch of rocks. I thought maybe we’d get lucky and get a good one but it was garbage.

The tumbler burned out. I went to add the third polishing compound and it will no longer work. It was a Christmas gift to my son from his sister. He’s pretty disappointed!
