Q: Does this model snap together? Or does it require glue?

submitted by Black N White - 5 years ago
  • A: No glue is required. The model is snapped and screwed together. All of the hardware comes in the kit. You just need a screwdriver, scissors and 2 "AA" (1.5V) batteries to power up the motor after it's built.

Turning kids AWAY from STEM

Smithsonian product usually is pretty good. This product quality -- from parts to instructions -- is just sub par. It states that it's suitable for 8 years old. If you give this to an 8 year old, you'll end up turning them away from STEM. We bought this because my son was interested in how engines work... now even the parents with engineering background are frustrated. Don't buy this product for promoting STEM education, it has the negative effect on your kids!

So much fun. Me and my bf did it together and was a great activity and easy to do. We had to do steps over and unscrew re screw etc but we got through it. The instructions are easy enough. You will need a tiny screw driver though and AA batteries.

Cool concept, disappointing results

Cjetter - 3 years ago
Bought this on a whim because it was being clearanced out at my target. I work in automotive and my son likes to build legos so we thought this might be a fun thing for us to do together. Over all it’s a really neat concept, however it did have some major flaws. The diagrams and instructions are not very good. You absolutely have to have a basic understanding of how a 4 cyl motor works. The plastic is very cheap and cross threads easily and the screws hollow out. Most of the parts don’t fit together well. Most importantly, it does not come with a screw driver. It took about three hours to build, and once it was finally together, it didn’t run. Such a disappointment

Cheap, wrong parts

Katie - 3 years ago
Frustrating... screws included were not the same kind of screws the instructions called for (flat end vs. pointed end) so my husband and son had to end up super glueing many of them that wouldn’t stay. Parts are cheap and not very well made. Wish I had gotten something else.

Girltalk88 - 3 years ago
The diagrams in the instructions are horrible. The instructions for assembling the camshaft do not match the actual orientation of the pieces. I searched several online forums of people having the same issue and found no answer. It sucks that this was a Christmas present and my kid waited a few hours in vain for me to try to finish putting this together for him.

Great great idea, poor execution and quality

mr_yeet_official - 4 years ago
I was very excited to assemble the engine and had a fun time doing so. However, I have a couple of complaints about the design and instructions that partially ruined the experience. First, there were several sections of the instructions that were extremely unclear and didn't correlate much at all with the actual parts/assembly. The worst of these mistakes is the camshaft assembly. Second, several of the parts were very low quality and basically prevented the engine from functioning properly once assembled. The worst examples of this are the "spark plugs" not staying in their locations and the crankshaft deflecting to the point where the drive gears didn't retain contact with each other (which stalled the engine). Third, there is two different valve cap types provided for the cylinders, with 4 of each. I was given 5 of one type and 3 of the other. Overall a great idea, but the errors in the instructions and lack of quality control kind of ruined the otherwise fun experience for me. I am 24 years old and about to graduate with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, so I am definitely a nerd and have higher expectations than they probably are expecting the target audience to have. But I thought I'd still give my opinion :)

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 8 year old nephew. I have never been so blown away by a gift I’ve given to a kid. My family is very Christmas focused and we do a LOT of gifts. Just the other day he told me that this gift was his favorite he has ever received. If you have a child who loves to build things, and maybe needs something extensive that can hold their attention, then this is what you need. It’s perfect for parent/child bonding time and is a very involved project. There are many many pieces and it will be exciting to see how it turns out!

Very nice Christmas gift for my son. It really works, you don't have to be a mechanic, and you will know the inner and outer workings of a real motor. Put it together in just a few hours, and it was fun.

So far to say, we are very happy with this kit. Not only is it a fun, interactive way for the kids to learn. It's also fun to watch everything working inside. So many questions answered in such a short amount of time really helps to wrap heads around how a motor works. To an extent of course
