Q: Ok. The top locks are they supposed to move together? I can’t get the dang thing to open! It’s aligned it is all set but when I try to open it only the top lock comes back.

submitted by Boymom2 - 4 years ago
  • A: I disagree with the answer above. Nothing about this latch mechanism is easy. It is a very poor design. I can tell already, in just the first hour, that my wife is going to tear this thing off the wall. I have taped one of the top pins open just to make it somewhat functional.

submitted byCraig - 4 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your question. The top will move and the bottom will spring open when you lift the gate door slightly and swing open.

Q: How can I purchase an additional set of the wall cups? I would like to move the gate to a different door way from time to time.

Q: I need it to fit 48" stair opening. I can't figure an extension combination that will fit. 36 + 10=46. +7 = 43. +4 = 40. Any suggestions?

submitted by mommaNana - 11 months ago
  • A: Hi! The large 10" extension should work well. With the tension bolts in place, the gate will cover the 48" opening. This would fall under configuration D in the instruction manual. Please reach out to us if you need any additional support! https://www.summerinfant.com/consumer-relations/contact-us

Q: Will I be able to install this between walls that are not parallel (one wall is at an angle)?

submitted by Angled Walls - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi - this gate works via pressure and requires that the walls be parallel in order for it to work effectively.

Q: Is this a tension gate? I am looking for a gate that I don’t have to drill anything into the wood trim on either side of the wall opening.

submitted by Rebecca - 2 years ago
  • A: Yes, the West End Safety Gate is a pressure-mounted gate that does not require drilling when installing in a doorway or hallway. To install this gate at the top of a staircase, please use the included hardware kit.

Q: Is there a way to turn off the auto-close feaure and keep the gate open?

submitted by millipicnic - 2 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your question. The West End Safety Gate has an auto-close and hold-open feature. To activate the hold-open feature, open the gate door at least 90 degrees in either direction. If the gate door is opened past 90 degrees, the door will stay open.

Q: Will this gate work with molding? I have molding along the bottom of the wall and then (obviously) none where the top part would be

submitted by kimmmmmmm - 2 years ago
  • A: Yes, the West End Safety Gate accommodates baseboard molding. Please make sure the gate is installed flush to the floor and adjust the top and bottom tension bolts to accommodate the doorway opening.

Gate review, overall good but definitely wish the latch or clasp was stronger and actually functioned

It is a beautiful gate, but the latching system for it is super weak and cheap feeling. I have to keep the guards that you can flip over to add for extra measures to keep it closed because otherwise it isn’t a strong hold to keep closed at all. Definitely makes it not worth $80, but the wood and metal look so much classier in my home and I am keeping this gate.

I have assembled a million gates. This does not fit my 60 in doorway. It must be 59.95 in because it is a hair short and now I have wasted 80 dollars on a gate that will not fit. If you need it for a smaller doorway it is a very nice gate.

NOT SAFE FOR STAIRS!! Otherwise great

Vellouria - 23 days ago, Verified purchaser
I’m writing a review for two reasons: 1) It is NOT safe to use a tension gate as a stair gate!!! I am shocked at the number of photos in these reviews of people using these for stairs. Baby gates designed for stairs specifically do not have the bar at the bottom because they are a HUGE tripping hazard on stairs. You will see all gates marketed specifically for stairs do NOT have this. 2) the people claiming their gate is broken or off balance, well… you really can’t help some people. This is how all tension gates work. They look bent until they are “tensed” into place.

LOVE THESE. We live in a 3 story house. I needed 2 of these for the main floor, the second floor. I love the nice modern touch these give our home. My one year old loves to stand by them and mess with them a little but they are so sturdy. No complaints.

Gate was setup with such ease and directions were very clear and to the point. I love that it also came with extra hardware (wall protectors, screws and a small wrench) in order to help you without having to buy them separately if you needed or wanted to use it. The color scheme is beautiful and it just gives the area we are using it a much cleaner look and feel now.

Could be good but the item we received was defective. The weld is crooked and the latch doesn’t even come close to being able to latch. Trying to call customer service to see how we handle a return but none of the lines are working.

Locking difficulty

Slush - 3 months ago, Verified purchaser
I was disappointed with this fence because it seemed not to lock. Looking at the directions it doesn’t properly warn you that once the fence is installed correctly it locks perfectly. I was going to return it until I saw this small paper attached to the fence. Once I aligned and tightened the bolts the fence locked. Don’t tighten to tightly or it will not properly unlock.

I’m only reviewing bc I see so many DUMB reviews saying it’s bent or broken. The fact that it COMES WITH A NOTE ON THE GATE saying that it’s normal and people still aren’t smart enough to see that they’re installing it incorrectly blows my mind. Great gate, looks nice! Super easy to install

Extremely easy to put together and all of the poor reviews complaining about how the metal is "bent" apparently don't understand how baby and pet gates work. They aren't supposed to latch out of the box because the frame is a large, pre-tensioned spring. Once you put them in the doorway tighten the hardware appropriately, the latch closes as designed. Without this design then you couldn't put enough force against the wall to keep it from falling over and you wouldn't be able to open it if you did.

Overall, the gate was easy to install in my 60" opening, with all the peices connecting right out of the box and no extra tools required outside of placing the four stops permanently on the wall, but the gate closing and opening doesn't work well because the wooden portion of the gate is slightly warped. I wasn't a big fan of the color scheme (gray metal/wood gate) but once installed it looks decent and 10x better than the plastic white stuff out there. My biggest issue is that the gate won't easily stay closed and once closed it doesn't easily open. I fiddle with a bunch of different tension settings and reinstalled it twice to no avail. After looking at everything more closely it looks like the issue is that the wooden gate itself is slightly warped so that the bottom of the gate doesn't line up with the top and so if the top is closed the bottom can't close unless its forced, requiring a lot more effort to close it and then with the extra tension, more effort to open it.

Metal frame is bent so no reasonable amount of pressure will press it flush. Even if it was flush the wooden gate sits crooked so it wouldn’t latch. Very disappointed, I should’ve read other reviews, because they mention this.

This gate may look pretty, but it's a complete waste of money. We kept fixing and rigging it up but after only 6 months of light use, it completely fell apart. Huge waste of money!!! And even when it was sort of working in the beginning, It never latched right. It was either so tight you couldn't open it, or so loose the baby just pushed right through. There's no inbetween.

We are sorry to hear about your experience. It sounds like that the installation was not fully complete. Before installation is completed, the door may appear off-center. As the tension bolts are extended, the door and door latches should come into alignment. If we can provide further assistance by a member of our team, please contact (401) 671-6551 so we can address your concerns. Many thanks!
