Lodge Color Porcelain Enamel on Cast Iron cookware is cast from molten iron in individual sand molds. The porcelain surface eliminates the need to season cast iron. The cast iron vessel has superior heat distribution and retention, evenly heating bottom and sides' even, tightly fitting lids seals in moisture. Knob is safe to 400 degrees. . The excellent heat retention reduces the amount of energy needed for cooking. Two layers of very hard, glossy porcelain enamel are chip resistant and easy to clean. The black cooking surface on the skillet is matte porcelain, not exposed cast iron. Hygienic porcelain enamel is non–reactive with food. This 6 Qt enamel Dutch oven is great for cooking, marinating, refrigeration and freezing Can be used on gas, electric, ceramic and induction cook tops, and in oven. Not recommended in microwaves, outdoor grills or over open outdoor flames. Although dishwasher safe, hand washing with warm soapy water is recommended to preserve the cookware's original appearance.

I really liked this dutch oven--greatprice, color but a chip appeared on the edge of the lid and I all I did was lightly wash it out before putting it away. I guess I will return it for another or buy the Giada brand for $.... more.

I am an experienced cook, and have several bare cast iron pieces, including several made by Lodge. Lodge's bare cast iron is good; unfortunately I can't say the same about this enamel pot.Bought this last week (Dec 29 '09). Hand washed it and used it the next day to make beef bourguignon--braised the meat and cooked the bourguignon in it. Turned out great, cleaned up nicely and easily, and I was very happy with it.Two days later I made no-knead bread. I replaced the handle with a stainless knob , as Lodge states that the pot is good to any oven temp but the knob is only safe to 400F (or 450F, depending on what you read). Again, worked great and I was happy with it.Then I pulled it out today, a week later (Jan 5 '10) and I noticed a blister forming in the enamel on the inside bottom of the pot. It's not obvious, but it clearly flexes and will break loose with even a bit more use.Maybe (like another reviewer), I just got a dud. Or maybe the pot isn't really safe above 400F. In any case, I don't keep spare pots of this size around; don't want to discover one night when I'm depending on it that it's failed; or have to closely examine it after every use to ensure it's OK.Not recommended. I will be returning it tomorrow.

I wanted to believe I got a bargain, but....

First of all, let me say that for almost a year I was extremely satisfied with this dutch oven and thought it was a great bargain....That is, until yesterday when I was browning some chicken in it and an inch sized chip appeared in the enamel in the bottom center of the pot. I guess you really do get what you pay for in the end. Rats, because now I can't afford to buy another one. I guess it was too good to be true. :(Let me also note that I am a very experienced cook (over 50 years old) and di d not mishandle the pot at all. In fact, I babied it. I am very disappointed.

I should not have to receive the product in order to find out for the first time that it was made in China. I am disappointed in Target for hiding this information deemed important to me and to other consumers. Consider the problems with products coming out of China for a moment (poisonous dog food, tooth paste, etc.) and you can see why this is important. If I had known this fact, I would not have ordered it. But because it was made by Lodge, a well known American manufacturer of cast iron coo king utensils, I thought I knew what I was getting. This will make me think twice before ordering from Target again unless they disclose exactly where the product was made.

I have several pieces of Lodge cookware. Mostly the plain cast iron. But when Lodge made the color series, I ran out and got this pot. It is large and cooks everything wonderfully. Cleans up nice and the color is really pretty and bright. It is just as good as my "French" brand cast iron set, but way cheaper. If you take care and season your Lodge products, they will last you a lifetime and beyond.

Awesome!

My hb and I love cast iron - he's from New Orleans and makes gumbos and etoufees and creoles in it. I use the iron skillets to make cornbread, etc. So, when they came out with this kind of iron pots/skillets, we were ready to try it -- and so far so good - it's nice-looking. Also, we just saw one at a store near us for $10 more than the Target price - even if we had had to pay shipping, it still would have come out a bit cheaper. The pot was delivered to us in record time, too -- we're pleased! Lodge is a good product...I'm glad Target is carrying it.
