Eight-track tapes do have a certain charm, but they're a little bulky to schlep on the treadmill. Okay, this might sound crazy…it's just a pipe dream, we know…but wouldn't it be great if someone invented a way to squeeze a whole bunch of songs, digitally, into a little gadget that would fit in your pocket, or an even smaller one that could clip to your clothes? That would be so cool. They could call the technology an MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3 player. Or do you think that's too clunky? Maybe they should shorten it to MP3 player. Yes, that has a much better ring to it. And maybe Apple could invent their very own version of the player and call it an iPod.
