Description

Book Synopsis

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

"They wandered in the darkness through the cobblestoned city, enchanted by the ringing of bells, drank their half-liter of habanero, and then slept in each other's arms. A sudden electrical storm had awakened them that night."

Although Malcolm Lowry published only two novels in his lifetime--*Under the Volcano* and *Ultramarine*--he left behind numerous manuscripts, most of which have now been published. *La mordida*, the most significant among those that have remained unpublished until now, translated here for the first time into Spanish and edited by Patrick A. McCarthy, is the draft of a novel based on Lowry's trip to Mexico in 1945-1946, which ended with the arrest and deportation of the writer and his wife after a nightmarish encounter with corrupt immigration authorities. On its most immediate level, the title refers to the Mexican term for the bribe paid to expedite a bureaucratic procedure and is tied to the protagonist's legal troubles. More broadly, it also represents his difficulty in escaping his past and paying the fine--or debt--that still haunts him.

*La mordida* is a descent into the abyss of being, a journey through the themes that obsessed Lowry: art, identity, the nature of existence, politics, and alcoholism. It is also a metafictional work about an author who finds no meaning in living if he cannot write it--and who not only is unable to write, but suspects as well that he himself may be nothing more than a character within a novel.
