Target Should Be Held Legally Accountable for Continuing to Sell Tampered Gift Cards After Being Made Aware of the Problem
Target Sold My Daughter a Tampered Mastercard Gift Card and Refused to Take Responsibility I am extremely disappointed with my recent experience at Target Cupertino address: 20745 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino, CA 95014, and I believe other customers deserve to be warned. My daughter purchased a sealed Mastercard gift card from Target. When she opened the package, we discovered that the last four digits of the 16-digit card number and the security (CVV) code on the back had been completely scratched off. They weren't simply difficult to read—they were gone. This made the card unusable. We immediately returned to the Target store to report the problem. What shocked me even more was seeing many more of the same Mastercard gift cards still hanging on the display rack. When I spoke with the store manager, I was told they were already aware that this has been happening. Despite knowing about the issue, the cards were still being offered for sale. I asked for a refund, but Target refused, stating that gift cards are a final sale and there was nothing they could do. Instead, I was told to contact Target Gift Card customer service. The irony is that the customer service system immediately asks for the full 16-digit card number before you can even get assistance. Since the last four digits on my daughter's card had been scratched off, we couldn't even get past the automated system. I then asked the manager to remove the remaining Mastercard gift cards from the shelves to prevent other customers from experiencing the same problem. I was told they could not remove them. As a customer, I find this unacceptable. When a retailer continues selling a product despite being aware that customers have repeatedly encountered serious problems with it, it raises concerns about customer protection and accountability. At a minimum, Target should remove the affected cards until the issue is resolved or provide immediate assistance to customers who unknowingly purchase defective cards. My frustration is not only with the defective gift card itself but with Target's refusal to stand behind a product they sold. Customers should not be left to navigate a complicated process after purchasing a sealed product that was defective from the moment it was opened. My advice to other shoppers: Be extremely cautious when purchasing Mastercard gift cards at Target. If you encounter a problem, you may be told that the purchase is a final sale and directed to contact the card issuer instead. Carefully inspect the packaging before purchase, keep your receipt, and consider using other payment methods or purchasing gift cards from sources that offer stronger customer support. I sincerely hope Target takes this issue seriously, investigates the affected gift cards, and implements better safeguards so other customers do not have the same experience my daughter did.

Dont purchase these
Bought it as a gift back in Sept. 2025 , the person I gave it to saved it to use (3/2026) . Just to find out someone had already used the card before it was used. Seems like Target gives away information.

DO NOT BUY! Fraudulent product, honest money--gone. (-) Stars.
DO NOT BUY! Card was defective within the security packaging. Last four digits were scraped off. No security code present. Unable to get assistance at store after opening, website reporting to fix the issue estimated time, 3 months. As an honest customer, having to prove that I’m not fraudulent is insulting. The product was bad before I bought it. I ask that reputable stores stop carrying these products until the process is changed to stop this situation from continuing.

Worthless - Do Not Purchase
OrOrdeWorthless - Do Not Ordered two e-gift cards. Received promptly, but when attempting to use them online, they were declined and a "hold" was placed on them with a note that I should call customer service. I called and they said they could not re-release the funds to the card but would have to mail a check. This was over a month ago, and still no check. I called, and they tell me they resubmitted my refund request and to check back in three weeks. Someone is running quite the gift card scam, and I'm shocked that Target is allowing this to happen as it reflects poorly on them as a business entity and erodes customer trust.
