About the Book

A modern, practical, and inspiring guide to creating deep heart connections with kids by regularly creating new experiences and intentional adventures together.

Book Synopsis

A modern, practical, and inspiring guide to creating deep heart connections with kids by regularly creating new experiences and intentional adventures together.

Parents today complain of fragmented relationships with their kids. What parents yearn for--and their kids too--is deep, heart-to-heart connections. But how can parents compete with all the other noise fighting for their kids' attention?

The answer, says Greta Eskridge, is to break free from regular routines and familiar comforts of home to experience new places and adventures--even if those adventures go awry. From simply reading a book together to going on an overnight backpacking trip, activities together provide unique and crucial bonding opportunities. Adventuring Together highlights Greta's stories of doing just that, including

  • an array of ideas for outdoor and indoor ventures,
  • what to do when your finances are limited,
  • and how to adventure if your family can't hit the hiking trail or spend the night at a campground.

Giving readers the tools to make adventures happen, Adventuring Together is a step-by-step guide for parents--whether in the city or the country--to start building connections today that will last a lifetime.

Is basically just a book of compilations of her memories as a child and with her children. Was hoping for more substantial material about connecting with children instead of a list of personal examples.

Encouraging Must Read!

This book has been such an encouragement to me! Greta’s heart to have mamas be intentional in cultivating relationships with our kiddos through adventures shines through in this book! “I’m sure this will make a great story later!” will become a motto in our family - we’ve had our share of misadventures that make us laugh now! This is a must read!

The Joy of the Adventure

5 out of 5 stars

“The joy of the adventure is simply spending time together. We must not discount an adventure because it is small. Instead, we need to recognize that the act of being together, no matter the place or activity, is what really creates bonds that last.” I haven’t quite finished yet, but this is such a good book. It keeps you thinking, has great ideas and stories. It’s so relatable, no matter your season of life (little kids or older, able to get out & about or not as much). I’m enjoying it a lot. I recommend reading it!

I love how real and honest Greta is about her adventures, misadventures, and attitudes. This isn't an "I'm perfect and here's everything you should be doing" book. Instead, reading anything Greta writes is like talking to a friend. Adventuring Together is full of encouragement for mamas like me with little ones, with limited budgets and options, and even if you don't actually like being outside (hiking and camping are not the only kinds of adventures you can have!)! I'm definitely planning to put many of her tips and mottos to use for our future adventures!

Practical and fun

This is a great book for anyone who needs some real life examples and practical suggestions for having adventures with your kids. Greta weaves engaging personal anecdotes with truths and principals we can all follow. I especially like her encouragement to start small and work your way up to the big adventures you dream of having with your family. Chapter 5 about her lifelong dream of taking an epic backpacking trip resonated with me so much. I am often tempted to pass on experiences that are less than what I dream of but Greta reminded me to accept whatever circumstances come my way and trust that they can create great memories even if they don’t seem like my “dream” adventures at first.

I firmly believe that this book can change lives. I love Greta’s stories of going on adventures, creating memories, and building relationships within her family. • Finishing the book left me inspired to be brave and bold with my kids, and excited to create our own adventures. Right now in our area, museums, zoos, etc. are still closed from COVID-19. I’m looking forward to visiting those places when they reopen, but in the meantime I know there are things we can do that don’t require masks or social distancing!

Connection through Adventure

I’ve followed Greta on Instagram for awhile now, and love her genuine joy for life that she shares. When I heard she was writing a book, I knew needed to read it. She is real and raw with sharing her struggles, but more than that her joy is tangible! She gives practical ways to find connection with your kids. Between the practical advice, she also shares wonderful real life anecdotes that will have you either laughing or crying. Greta gives you the tools you need to go on a hike or to the Art Museum. As a bonus, she also shares how to start an Adventure Club or Book Club with friends. This is such an important read for any parent!!

his book is perfect for any parent, but especially for moms. So often we underestimate ourselves and our kids. Adventuring Together provides tips, tools, and encouraging words that have already enabled me to navigate some situations with my kids. Greta will bring you to tears (in a good way), but also make you laugh out loud.

"If you really want to connect with your kids through adventure, just start where you are."

"If you really want to connect with your kids through adventure, just start where you are. Don't wait until you and your kids are ready for something you think is "big" enough. Small adventures count. Small adventures matter. Small adventures bring joy. Small adventures are the stepping stones to bigger ones." Honestly, there are so many quotes from this book that I would love to include here. SOOOOO many! I adore Greta. She is fun, witty, and real. This book is just the same. I love reading about her adventures with her children over the years, as well as the misadventures. It makes it seem feasible to someone like me who has a threenager in the mix in this season of our lives. Sometimes those grand adventures seem overwhelming because, well they can be, especially with little ones. But does that mean that we just don't look for adventure at all? It shouldn't. I have had a tug at my heart to be more intentional with my time and my children. I have been blessed with these sweet, quickly growing children. And if I want to make a those lasting connections, I have to put the work in. Will it always be easy? No, but is anything that is worth it ever REALLY easy?! This book has given me the push to do just that - to take the adventures we have been talking about but too hesitant to actually pursue. Greta shares her stories, along with practical advice along the way. She shares ideas of how to start adventuring with your children of all ages - big adventures, as well as smaller. All of them will make an impact and everlasting impression on your children! This book came at just the right time.

Building Lasting Relationships Through Adventure!

5 out of 5 stars
Nbanks - 5 years ago
I very much enjoyed Adventuring Together! Greta Eskridge is a mom of 4, who writes about ways she has used adventures of all sorts to build relationships with her kids that have lasted into their teen years. As a young mom, I loved hearing her insight and wisdom into how to foster relationships with my kids and tips for how to make adventures work with kids of all ages. I especially liked reading her stories, and her encouragement that “misadventures” can be just as important to building character, memories, and relationship. With a toddler and infant, most vacations, hikes, and fun outings we attempt tend to have at least some element of misadventure to them! Greta is a gifted and encouraging storyteller, and reading her book was like getting to have a cozy chat with a more seasoned mom who has been successful in creating healthy, lasting relationships with her kids (and in having a ton of fun with them!). I definitely recommend this book!

For all parents - How to Connect with your Kids

5 out of 5 stars
Susan E - 5 years ago
"Adventuring together simply means getting outside the confines of your regular routine. Whether that means you are literally stepping outside the walls of your house and onto the hiking trail, like my family loves to do, or getting lost together in an adventure story, the key is that you are doing something different together. Those simple moments create lasting memories and connection." - From the Introduction of Greta Eskridge's new Book, "Adventuring Together." This book is a gift of God given through Greta to the world. For exactly this time. What an IMPORTANT message this is. FOR ALL PARENTS. This is a how-to manual for keeping our kids' hearts connected to ours. They need it so much in today's society. Since 2012 and the introduction of the smartphone, teen suicide rates have skyrocketed in the USA (see the book iGen by Jean Twenge for the data and statistics on this). I am not claiming that any one book is the answer to teen suicide, but there is so much in this book that can turn the "trend" of disconnection that many kids are feeling right now...due to many factors. This book releasing during the COVID quarantine of 2020 is also serendipitous because many families are finding themselves, for the first time ever, without overscheduled lives, and have time to go camping or read aloud, or play games together.

This book filled me with courage

I loved this book. I felt like I was going on the adventures with Greta. I can't wait to listen to the audio version! I appreciated most her tips at the end of the chapters. They were so practical and made me feel like I could pull off any adventure I wanted to with my 4 kiddos. I especially recommend this book to moms who have been hesitant to take on adventures because of the unknown. You'll have a sudden burst of courage after reading this book.

A Great Book on Adventuring With Your Kids

4 out of 5 stars
Kelly Russell - 5 years ago
"The joy of the adventure is simply spending time together. We must not discount an adventure because it is small. Instead, we need to recognize that the act of being with one another, no matter the place or activity, is what really creates bonds that last." - Greta Eskridge, Adventuring Together: How to Create Connections and Make Lasting Memories with Your Kids I love this book. When I signed up to be on Greta's launch team for Adventuring Together, I knew the subject matter was perfect to me because it is a topic that is near and dear to me. One of the reasons my children are homeschooled is for the ability to have adventures practically whenever we wanted to. From following her Instagram, I also knew that the types of adventures that Greta took with her own family were the same ones that I usually took with my own. Greta's fire and love for adventuring through life with her kids is evident through this book. She speaks clearly and passionately for stepping away from our comfort zones to experience life outside of our homes with our children at our side. Her reasons for this are many but the focus is that "thoughtful, intentional activities" are necessary to connecting strong bonds in family relationships. Falling into a rhythmic, monotonous pattern in our every day lives happens to many of us. We have to take the time to plan for things beyond the norm, that really stretch and grow us, with our children. She touches speaks to changing our hearts to do right by our kids so very well. Starting with our own attitudes in conjunction with taking big steps towards adventuring with our kids is hugely important. If you need encouragement to get out and do more with your kids, or maybe your family is in a slump that just will never end (been there, done that!), I highly recommend you to take the time to read this. I came away so inspired to get out there, immediately, and explore and wander with my children, taking risks and bonding in ways that only shared experiences can bring. Greta gives many ideas on what to do when our adventures become misadventures, growing past activities into new ones, doing hard things, nature activities, books to read aloud, how to create an Adventure Club, and so much more. Caveat: Okay, okay. So CoVID-19. Yeah, this makes adventuring together look different than maybe what we would like it to. However, many of things that Greta writes about or lists as possibilities are things that can be done online. In fact, you will find a whole chapter devoted to indoor activities and while maybe visiting museums is not feasible at the moment, there are so many more experiences she recommends that can be created at home. In conclusion, if you, like Greta, want to foster and shape close relationships with your kids, pick up this book and try some of the recommended activities. Starting with your own heart, and then encouraging the hearts of your children, try something new and see where it leads you.

Inspiring and Encouraging!

Adventuring Together is an excellent read for any parent who wants to connect with their children on a deeper level, but doesn't know where to start. I knew I wanted to invest intentionally in my kids, but was lacking inspiration and direction until I read Greta's book. Every time in my reading that I thought "this particular concept sounds so wonderful, but... (Insert mental excuse here)" Greta came through with not only practical advice for working through it, but reassuring words to meet parents on every level of comfort zones and abilities, and beautiful testimonies of the deep connections that make overcoming those challenges so worthwhile. I am so thankful for the memories I have of growing up going on adventures with my family, but now as a young Mom I often find myself letting small things get in the way of leading my own kids on adventures. Silly things, like not knowing how I'm going to find parking or getting overwhelmed trying to figure out which displays to look at in what order. Greta's words have strengthened my desire and courage to improve in my adventuring, not because it will always be easier than I expect, but because the strengthened relationships and memories made will be so worth pushing through the challenges that will inevitably come. I laughed, I cried, I loved it.

Making lasting connections

This book has been so encouraging to me. I loved the part that said, “I’m writing this book for the rest of us mamas. For the one who’s never taken her kids on a hike. And who wonders if she can. For the one who can’t afford to take her kids on exotic adventures. The one who hates camping and can’t fathom peeing in the woods. The one who doesn’t like driving in traffic and is too nervous to take a road trip without her spouse. I’m writing this for the mama who is terrified she’ll see a snake on the trail. Or that she’ll get lost on a city subway or a country road. The one who isn’t in the best shape. And the one who doesn’t even own a backpack.” .........All me. But I do have such a desire to connect with my kids and get outside in nature with them, especially to hike. So when Greta says all I need is “a willing heart and a desire to connect with my kids. The rest will follow”, I believe her.

This has been one of the most encouraging reads! It has given me hope that I'll be able to create lasting memories and heart connections with my kids through our adventures together. Sometimes that's going to the store and playing eye spy to keep them engaged or it may be a day trip to a new outdoor space. Regardless of where the adventures take you, rest assured that your kids will come along side you, learn with you, and love that time just spent together. Thank you, Greta, for pouring your heart onto these pages to come along side all of the parents who long to build life long connections with their kids! Highly recommend!

Do you know the author? No? Well, after you read this book she will feel like one of your best friends! Throughout this book Greta (the author) leads us on a journey of discovering adventure with our children and the bond that it brings. She reveals wisdom that is simplistic yet profound about the time we spend with our kids. She does this largely through stories of adventures she took with her dad as well as with her own children. And let me tell you..she is a beautiful storyteller. You will find yourself cheering her on in difficulties she faced, laughing about some of the situations she gets into, and maybe even crying from her encouragement. She assures you that regardless of how adventurous you think you are or are not you most definitely can and should adventure with your kids. She points out how there are so many less distractions on an adventure versus spending time with your kids just sitting at home and how bonding happens through shared experiences and learning new things together. This is a read you won’t regret and when your kids are grown you will be so glad you stumbled upon!

"Adventuring together gives us the opportunity to open up our hearts to one another and to the world around us." This is a great book for any parent wanting to learn more about how to make lasting connections with your children and the importance of family adventures! From a camping trip in Yosemite to riding the subway station, Greta shines the light that adventures don't have to be grand to make lasting memories and connections with your family. She shares real life experiences of her family adventures, life giving traditions, and practical tips on how to begin adventures with your own family. I cried, laughed and cheered YES throughout the entire book! It's definitely a book to keep on hand to pull out for motivation and inspiration. Adventuring Together is a book this technology driven world needs more than ever right now.
