About the Book

Book Synopsis

A fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the two most iconic boxing promoters in the last 100 years.
When it comes to boxing promoters, there are no two figures more successful than Bob Arum and Don King. Both ruled the sport at the highest level for several decades, promoting such superstars as Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao.
In Arum and King: Six Decades of Boxing Gold, television producer and director Marty Corwin provides a unique perspective into the lives and careers of these two legends. As the only person to have been a department head for both promoters, Corwin offers fresh insight into what happens before, during, and after the fights--the dealings, the prep work, the negotiations, the mind games--and shares it all in this book for the first time. In addition, Corwin takes readers inside the complex world of broadcasting for some of boxing's most iconic moments.
There will never be another Bob Arum or Don King. Boxing promotion has changed dramatically since both men began their careers. Today, hundreds of internet channels, streaming services, social networks, and broadcast outlets muddy the promotional waters. The inside stories featured in Arum and King therefore reveal not only the difficult, risky, and exhausting lives of boxing promoters, but also deliver a glimpse into the end of an era.

Review Quotes

"A truly remarkable and educational masterpiece, Arum and King: Six Decades of Boxing Gold offers a captivating fly-on-the-wall perspective shaped by the author's unparalleled experience and rich stories of boxing legends Bob Arum and Don King. With a deep dive into the niche of the boxing business, this book presents a treasure of fascinating tales, historical insights, and a compelling overview of the evolution of the sport. A must-read for anyone seeking to explore the past, present, and future of boxing with facts, reason, and an unmatched depth of wisdom." --Timothy Bradley Jr., 5-time world champion boxer, boxing commentator for ESPN, and 2023 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee

"Truly a one-of-a-kind look behind the scenes of boxing and its biggest players. A unique perspective that takes you back to some of the best days and times in the sweet science, feeling almost as if you were witnessing the history in the making yourself." --Crystina Poncher, commentator, host, and reporter for Top Rank Boxing, ESPN

"This riveting account of boxing's golden era, featuring the larger-than-life figures of Bob Arum and Don King, delivers a gritty portrayal of the sport and its most controversial and influential promoters, while unveiling hidden gems about my grandfather's life behind the ropes I didn't know existed." --Nico Ali Walsh, rising middleweight star boxer, grandson of Muhammad Ali

"The history of boxing is as rich and varied as any sport and you cannot tell that incredible history without recognizing the promotional genius of Don King and Bob Arum. The two Hall of Fame promoters were fierce rivals whose competitive nature resulted in many of the most memorable matches in boxing. Talented television producer Marty Corwin had a ringside seat to the promotional titans as he worked closely with them as the only person to be department head for both Hall of Famers. His book is a must read behind the scenes look into the world of professional boxing by two of the best promoters to ever do it." --Edward Brophy, executive director, International Boxing Hall of Fame

"Best probably to buy the book because he deserves me not spilling some of the tastiest anecdotes, of which there is no shortage considering that Marty ran hip to hip with "Col. Bob Sheridan." Great stuff, but if you are like me, you probably will take more than marginal delight in the recollections of the Colonel. Those alone make the hardcover a worthy purchase." --Fights Around the World
