Description

Legendary blues vocalist Carrie Smith comes forth in a decidedly rare performance from 1987 at the now defunct Carlos I Jazz Restaurant. On this recording, we have her regular band at the time, featuring a young Joey "G-Clef" Cavaseno on alto saxophone, of Illinois Jacquet and Panama Francis fame. Junior Mance plays piano and acts as musical director (Gene Ammons, Cannonball Adderley). Tootsie Bean, the great Bermudan drummer (Bobby Forrester, Ruth Brown) is driving this hard swinging group. Rounding it out on bass is Marcus McLaurine (Clark Terry, Jay Hoggard). This album really provides the listener with a glimpse of what Carrie Smith's New York City working band sounded like during the late 1980s, after she had become a legend in Europe. This album also contains 3 bonus tracks of Carrie Smith performing live in other settings.
