Durch die Natur inspiriert entstanden verschiedene Berechnungsverfahren, die im Wissenschaftsgebiet der Computational Intelligence (CI) zusammengefasst sind. Hierzu zählen die etablierten Kernbereiche der Fuzzy-Systeme, Künstliche Neuronale Netze und Evolutionäre Algorithmen sowie aus diesen zusammengeführte Hybride Methoden. Hinzu kommen die noch jungen Gebiete der Schwarmintelligenz und der künstlichen Immunsysteme. So bewegt sich die CI an der Schnittstelle zwischen Ingenieurswissenschaften und Informatik.
