The latest release from Drift Into Black, When Ashes Remain, represents the band's most ambitious and diverse work to date, continuing the story begun on 2021's Patterns Of Light, a harrowing tale of a deaf/mute girl who witnesses her mother's murder at the hands of her stepfather and begins a journey toward retribution. Her spirit now watches over a young boy suffering his own abuse, offering solace and comfort through her protective embrace, with the character brought to life by the inimitable force of NYC artist ALYXX, whose vocal work across the past three albums adds a cinematic, theatrical quality that makes the storytelling immersive and soul-crushing. Additional guests include William Smith (Reeking Aura, Buckshot Facelift) on vocals and Semir Özerkan (Nevermore, Oceans of Slumber, Necrofier) on guitars, while the artwork and inlay designs come from legendary artist Travis Smith (Opeth, Katatonia, etc.). Musically, the album balances dirge-like doom passages with melodic, atmospheric interludes, highlighting the band's ability to shift between brutality and melancholy.
