Book Synopsis

Pixar animators Sequoia Blankenship and Rob Thompson deliver a madcap adventure through Hollywood as Feo, a down-on-his-luck chupacabra, must transform into a famous movie monster to save his hometown.

This heartfelt debut graphic novel from two seasoned Pixar animators is a funny, fast-paced adventure about the power of friendship and the importance of believing in yourself.

When the tiny Mexican town of Cabrito Viejo is in danger of being bought out by a nefarious film studio, Feo, the mythical but feisty chupacabra, teams up with Camila, a plucky mechanic and local monster enthusiast, to hatch a plan to save their home.

Inspired by her father's collection of monster movies, the pair head to Hollywood to convince famed screenwriter Doctor Acula to put Feo's name up in lights. But Feo isn't exactly the terrifying fiend that local legends make him out to be.

Can the unlikely duo really save the village by making the chupacabra Hollywood's next great monster?

Review Quotes

"An easy win for middle-grade fans of Pixar movies and monsters."

-- "Booklist"

"Rich purple hues blend into sunny golden yellows and glowing oranges, evoking the jovial warmth of Festival del Chupacabra and the cinematic magic of Camila's beloved films, while authentic cultural iconography and storytelling result in an underdog tale about friendship and the pitfalls of fame."

-- "Publishers Weekly"

"Readers will be charmed by the unique chupacabra protagonist in this lighthearted, comedic homage to classic monster movies."

-- "School Library Journal"

"This charming graphic novel takes readers on a well-paced ride as Camila and Feo go on a train journey, encounter danger, meet notorious monsters, and ultimately discover that friendship matters more than fame...An odd couple journey full of heart and hope."

-- "Kirkus Reviews"

About the Author

Sequoia Blankenship is a writer who loves stories, film, comics, and cajeta. He has been drawing and telling tales (not just to get out of trouble) for as long as he can remember, and has had the good fortune to work and animate at Pixar Animation Studios for 23 years (way longer than anyone expected). His animation has appeared in such films as Ratatouille, Incredibles 2, and Coco, to name a few. Sequoia lives with his family in Petaluma, California, the self-proclaimed "Butter and Eggs Capital of the World," which means they have to watch their cholesterol. Rob Thompson is an animator currently living in California. He has worked on several Pixar films, including Ratatouille, Toy Story 3, and Inside Out 2. Thompson grew up in San Diego, where he spent many hours hiding from the sun in local comic book shops. He lives with his girlfriend and their two chupacabras.
